Command and Conquer 1 and 2 don't work any more

I can't seem to run any of the CnC games I downloaded about a year ago and any time I try to open them (having unistalled and re-installed multiple times) I simply get a pop-up with a warning symbol, the name of the game, and nothing else, not even telling me what the problem is.

How do I fix this?

The games in question are Covert Operations and Tiberium Sun from the origin ultimate collection.

P.S. I haven't tried the red-alert series but newer games like Tiberium war and Generals work normally so I don't know if it's just an age thing or the games I downloaded originally specifically.

A lot of the games have been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. You can find them here:

    Command & Conquer 1:

    Red Alert 1:

    Tiberian Sun:

    Red Alert 2:

    • I advise installing the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes. It should automatically take care of the "black screen on startup" issue, and has a configuration tool that allows further tweaking of the game's settings.

    Generals:

    • GenTool seems to be the main patch for Generals these days. The website is kind of vague on what it does besides restoring multiplayer and adding anti-cheat, but I heard it does a lot to make it work better on modern OSes too.
    • If you have issues with DirectX errors popping up, find and delete the file "dbghelp.dll" in the game's install folder.

    Renegade:

  • Thanks a ton for these links. Sorry you had to go out of your way to send them to me when you have those other threads with these links already. I'm very tech illiterate, having spent much of my life being a console only person until relatively recently.

So far, they've worked perfectly for Covert Operations (aside from a weird double screen glitch that went away) and Tiberium Sun but I'll be sure to keep my eye out if something goes silly.

@Fanficlover01 The double screen glitch is kind of unavoidable; it's a side effect of running the game in a higher resolution than the size of the game maps. So it's kind of caused by the high resolution patch. Reverting the game to the original 640x480 resolution fixes it permanently. But, yea, just opening the main menu removes the ghost image anyway, and it stops being an issue on later missions since the maps get bigger.

Just a note, if you have more issues, and you reply in an existing topic, start your post with my name prefixed with @ like I did up here; it'll send me an email notification, so I know someone's replied to me.
