hi, know this is a bit old but, but i had same porblem as you.
i got it working by right clicking on the game in origin libary on hitting: 'Game properties' and then mark:' Disable origin in game for this game'
On windows 8.1 i have only tried Red Alert 2 so far <3

Guys Taenbolle's way works!! I installed windows 8.1 today and noticed that my game wouldnt work until now when i tryed this for command and conquer. I tryed to delete the document and change the options and none of that worked. So I hope everyone out that has this problem see's it so they can fix their game.
I got Generals working on Windows 8.1 by disabling Origin in game. Thanks!

When exactly did you disable origin? Before you down loaded the game or after?

i dont understand please explain how? i didnt have origin installed when i played this game.i installed it now and disable but it dint work help me please

Um... obviously that only applies to the Origin version of the game, from the Ultimate Collection pack.
