can you play C&C remastered using mac computers?

  • Hi.  I'm running a MAC with VMWARE running Windows 10.  It runs, but I'm having graphics issues.  It won't run native in iOS (Mac operating system).

  • Well, lack of MacOS is a real deal breaker for me. So get that ported and fixed! If you won't make that decision EA, too bad I made it for you.

Supporting OSX isn't as easy as supporting Windows and Linux. (Yes I know Linux support isn't available either.)

A big part of the problem is that Apple refuse to allow their OSX to be in virtualised environments, so supporting OSX at all requires (expensive) Apple hardware and developer licensing. The team have already stated that they don't have access to a wide range of hardware due to the C-word pandemic, which is also why they've not been able to gather enough test data on Windows yet. Furthermore there is a significant difference in the platforms, meaning large amounts of the game's code will require anything from minor rewrites to significant redesigns to work on different platforms. (Remember that this game started with the released source code of its original, which was MS-DOS and Windows.) There's just tons more support, experience, and an overall bigger leg up with Windows when it comes games development.

Even if alternative platforms were to be developed for there is also a question of support. Again this requires Apple hardware/software, with team members very experienced on that environment.

There is also a captive audience to consider given that this is a commercial product. With this game going on Steam I'm sure their regular hardware surveys will have been a key decision on platform support. In the May 2020 survey only 4.04% of Steam users are running on Mac, and 95% on Windows. Despite Steam being available on Mac for (just over) 10 years this is still a very niche market.

When all is considered focusing on Windows was the best option in the short term. -- As a member of a game development team myself I can feel for the team when it comes to the challenges of supporting both Linux and OSX.

Perhaps try out running Windows on Oracle VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation, or Parallels in the short term. Alternatively if you have a Windows box capable of running this game you could use Steam's streaming feature to play it on your Mac. (This wouldn't be a very expensive solution with something like an Intel NUC, and could serve you plenty of other Windows exclusive games too.)

Not what you want to hear I'm sure. There are just plenty of reasons why lots of games don't become available on Macs. 🙂

  • Why am i on a mac...been waiting years for this...i see a banner saying its available.....i run down the rabbit trail......i check and it shows if i give 20.00 i can get it for Mac.....I click....i give my 20.00.....it still friggen shows its available for mac one place but not another.....give me my money back you scammers! make it so easy to pay but i cant get any kinds of support to get a measly 20.00 back.

@Galacticsquire7 2 years later and Steam's Mac ownership has dropped from 4% to 2.6%. There's not going to be a commercial interest in this.
  • @AdamRHi AdamR, the remaster is EPIC. ahh understandable, I have just read the previous message regarding the reasons why it did not release on Mac, insightful thanks.
If the Mac edition was on steam, the Mac percentage would surely be more.

  • @AdamR At least that saves my Apple mouse from wear and tear, although I would have being happy to buy a mouse specifically to play remastered, instead now I will buy a new windows laptop. lol
