RA2 Unable to set video mode - Windows 10 - no previous advice has worked!

Hi.

So I am having an issue with both RA2 and Yuri's Revenge on my laptop running Windows 10. Every time I start the game, it will not launch and I get the message "Error - unable to set the video mode"

I have looked at a variety of forums and have tried the following - none have worked:

- running the .exe files for both games in compatability mode for Windows 98/XPSP2/XPSP3/Vista/7/8

- running these as administrator

- running low colour mode and low resolution modes

- As a have never been able to start the game, there is no RA2.ini file in the game directory so I cannot edit this.

- Disabling Origin interference in the game

- setting the launch option as "W" and "-W" on origin.

In short, I loved this game when it came out and really wanted to play it again - if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. Here is a screengrab of the message.

    UPDATE. I fixed it!

Here is how I did it:

    - So, because there was no RA2.ini file, I went to this website and can confirm the file is genuine and hasn't caused me any issues http://originaldll.com/file/ra2.ini/33661.html

    - I downloaded this to the RA2 program folder, where I edited the video settings to set my resolution and added the VideoBackBuffer=no command

    - Then, I launched the program using RA2MD.exe using the same folder, which offered me the window where you can choose RA2 or YR.

    - It now works perfectly - no lag! However I am still getting the same error for Yuri's revenge

Yuri's Revenge has its own configuration file, namely RA2md.ini. It's entirely possible that just making a copy of the RA2 ini to ra2md will fix it, mind you.

Overall, this might indicate the game can't write a default settings file when starting the game. To remedy this, find all executables in the folder (there may be 4 or even 5), open in their compatibility settings, and make sure every single one of them is set to run as administrator.

Hey, thanks for responding to me! (also, your patch for CNC1 is a lifesaver)

So I tried creating a second .ini file under RA2md.ini by cloning the first one, and changed all .exe programs in the folder to run as admin, but for some reason it won't work still and I'm getting the same error as before. If you have any other suggestions I would be happy to hear them, although in fairness I'm just happy I've got the original game running

    Heh, thanks!

Hmm. One thing I could advise you is to try the CnCNet online pack for RA2/YR, then. Even if you have no interest in playing online, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes that might solve your issues, and on the forums of cncnet you'll find a very helpful and knowledgeable community to help you out with any further problems.
