Red Alert 2 Crashes during Mission Load

Red Alert 2 crashes while attempting to load any given mission or map.  I tried to load up the first mission in both campaigns and the tutorial, all of them crash about 66% of the way through.  Same with any skirmish I attempt to start.  The game launches perfectly, no lag.  I have it set to windows 98 compatibility and to run as an administrator.  It does give a generic error message, stating that Red Alert 2 has encountered an internal error but doesn't provide any specifics.  Does anyone know a fix for this?

EDIT: I've tried reinstalling the game twice, just to make sure file integrity wasn't the cause.  I also made sure files were given proper permissions.

Specs:
Windows 10 Home x64

Intel i7-6400k @ 4GHz

16GB DDR4 RAM

GTX 970 4GB

I tried that too, the same error occurs no matter what compatibility mode I put it in.

@Cthulhu980 Hm. There are a few things you can do to help RA2 to run better:

    • Make sure to disable Origin In Game overlay in the Origin settings for the game
    • Run in winXP SP3 compatibility mode, and make sure to also check the "Run as admin." option
    • The graphics system patch DDWrapper is known to solve a bunch of issues related to graphics. Your crash might be related to the DirectX system; you never know, so it's worth a try.
Download the zip file and extract "ddraw.dll" and "aqrit.cfg" into your game folder. Then, open the configuration file "aqrit.cfg" in Notepad, change the "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" option to 1, save the file, and the game should work.

Alright, I tried DDWrapper as you suggested.  Unfortunately this didn't correct it, it still crashes 66% of the way through (literally the same "square" it crashes at every single time).  I also disabled origin overlay and tried XP SP3 compatibility.  The only change with DDWrapper was I now get desktop artifacts on flashing on the screen.

  • i'm having the same problems and i am running windows 7 so not sure what the deal is
