Red Alert 2 Issues

The graphics are a complete mess and the only colours showing are purple & green, also the picture is only taking up half my screen. Is there any known fix for this?

It's the same on both my screens - 3440 x 1440 & 3840 x 2160

i7 4790k

980ti

16GB RAM

Thanks for any help, i never played Yuri's Revenge when  was younger so would like to try it, although the maximum resolution looks very low. I was thinking of buying the C&C Collecton but i'm worried it will have the same issue.

Command & Conquer 1, Red Alert 1 and Tiberian Sun have all been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. For Red Alert 2 there's a more general patch that solves a lot of its graphics problems. You can find them here:

    • The graphics system patch DDWrapper is known to solve the "black screen" issue, and a bunch of other graphical issues, probably including the one you have.
Download the zip file and extract "ddraw.dll" and "aqrit.cfg" into your game folder. Then, open the configuration file "aqrit.cfg" in Notepad, change the "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" option to 1, save the file, and the game should work.

Do note, Red Alert 2 was originally designed for 800x600. The graphics in these old games don't scale with the resolution like 3D games do, meaning that increasing the resolution will be showing more map space instead. Too many objects on the viewed screen at the same time is known to cause serious game lag issues, no matter how powerful your PC, and, in pixels, your native resolutions are both over ten times the original intended screen size. So, yeah, you might not want to play at quite that high a resolution. Though I guess resolutions like 1600x???? are probably fine 😉

@neogrant Wouldn't the use of an override ddraw.dll done by cncnet affect the normal game exe just as much as the cncnet one?
