Red Alert 3 DirectX

I downloaded Red Alert 3 from Origin.

But, after launching I keep getting the message -

Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed. Also verify

that your video card meets the minimum requirements, and that you

do not have hardware acceleration disabled in the Display control

panel.

I have Windows 10 installed and have been through numerous troubleshooting with the EA staff - who are about as useful as tits on a bull.

Any ideas?

Peculiar. I didn't know RA3 had that too.

The problem is actually that the "or higher" part of the error message is wrong. Microsoft didn't include all of the older DirectX components in the newer DirectX. Meaning, the solution is to install DirectX 9.0c to make sure you got all the stuff the game needs.

    • Download the DirectX Redistributables package from June 2010. Be sure to uncheck any other junk they want to add to it. It should be a file called "directx_Jun2010_redist.exe".
    • Run the downloaded file. It'll ask for a folder to unpack in. Make a new folder somewhere on your disk and unpack it there. It doesn't matter where you unpack it; it can be deleted afterwards anyway.
    • Go to the folder where you told it to extract.
    • Find "DXSETUP.exe", and run that to install the missing components.
    • After the installation finished, delete the folder you unpacked everything in.

Of course, this seems to be a pretty catch-all error message, so if that doesn't help, it could still be one of the other possibilities mentioned in the error.

  • I have exactly the same problem. But if I connect a TV with an HDMI cable, the game works without any problems. I suspect that my laptop/notebook is not accessing my GTX 1050 Ti although I have tried everything. I have an HP pavilion 15 gaming laptop. Sorry my english is not the best.

  • Same problem. HP Pavilition gaming laptop with dedicated GTX1050Ti card. I've tried compabaility modes, running as admin, installing game directly to C:/ folder (to avoid 'deepness'" if that's a thing).  I'm unable to play Red alert 3. I'll keep trouble shooting and post a reply if I find a solution.

  • its 6 years later yes, but i hope this helps someone. I know you tried EVERYTHING it says, nothing worked right? well the only solution that it worked with me, may sound so weird ,but it works?
basically run it windowed mode and different resolution.

Go to the game icon, right click on it , click on " Proprties" then to "shortcut", first row after the game path and after the " , MAKE SURE to press space and then paste this

    -win -xres 1024 -yres 768

    and it will magically work.

  • You, sir, are a Godsend. Now it's just being weird about scaling 125% when I everything set to 100%, but that's just a math game if I can't find the issue. Thank you!

  • This is why the internet is so amazing. Thank you. Even though your solution didn't work for me as it is, it gave me the strength to keep digging and figure out the solution for me.

The problem was that I bought the Ultimate Collection on the Origin/EA so if that's anyone else's case as well you have to install the "Fixed Ultimate Collection Launchers" by Medstar (https://www.moddb.com/games/cc-generals/downloads/new-fixed-ultimate-collection-launchers-v101). This will allow you to start the RA3 and RA3 uprising directly from the "Command and Conquer Red Alert 3\Red Alert 3\RA3.exe" and "Command and Conquer Red Alert 3\Red Alert 3 Uprising\RA3EP1.exe" exe files without launching the EA app (former Origin). Then you have to create a shortcut for the exe file and then follow the instructions from the Alqsh described above. That is right-click on the shortcut -> Properties -> and at the end of the "Target:" line copy " -win -xres 1920 -yres 1080" (including the first blank space) so it looks something like "C:\GAMES\Command and Conquer Red Alert 3\Red Alert 3 Uprising\RA3EP1.exe" -win -xres 1920 -yres 1080". Of course, you have to use the resolution of your monitor.

This will allow you to launch the game but it might be broken. The star panel might be over the game, and at the top, you will have a white line. Now close the game and delete the "-win" from the "Target:" line and lunch again. If it worked, you are welcome. Now get out there commander!

Found a fix using this guys video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNdntbMpees&t=13s

In my case with the EA games app

Go to your games directx folder: usually located under: C: // Program files > EA Games > Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 > _Installer > directx > redist

Sort your files by type, find the DXSETUP file, install it and you should be abel to play the game, I even managed to change resulution without the game crashing.
