After importing character the game stops saving games

I have enountered I really strange problem when importing my character from Origins to Awakening. I have Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate edition that was purchased via Steam.

The issue is that the game stops saving progress either via quick save, auto save or using the traditional save. The game says the game is saving but when I go to the load menu I don't see it. The files aren't even created.
I have tried making a new character for Awakening but the problem persists.
After further testing it seems that the problem spread to all other DLCs and to the Origins. I try making new saves but without success.
I have also verified the game but it says that all the files are OK.

Any help is welcome because I would hate losing my character after completing the Origins storyline and most DLCs except Golems with all the equipment and characteristics.

  • Can you provide more details about what you're doing and what you're seeing?  Like where you are in the game when you make a save, and exactly what you're doing and what you see when you go to the "Load" menu.

As you describe it, this basically cannot not happen.  😕mileyfrustrated:

My guess is that you are switching between the DAO and DAA, and are not seeing in the one the saves that you made in the other.  Which is correct, and by-design.  You need to "Switch Character" to find the saves that were made in any module other  than the last one you played.

    Thx!

Basicly I just finished the Origins storyline with all the additional content(Soldier's peak, Return to Ostragar etc.). So I wanted to continue with my original character into the Awakening story line and so I imported him into Awakening(which I started from other campaigns menu).

That went OK I started playing with all my equipment and  I'm now right at the start of Awakening and there has been one auto save from the game, I quick saved once(out of habit).

I then went to check my quick save but the load game window is empty. There is no auto save, no quick save, no save of any kind. I checked the folder where the saves should be and there are only old saves made before today.

I tried making saves with different names but no luck. The window remains empty. When I click switch character button there are only saves I made from other DLCs with different characters.

I tried making new saves in the other DLCs with new characters with the same result ie. there are no saves of any kind made.

I don't know how this can be happening but it's happening.

BTW I finished the additional DLCs(Witchunt, Leliana's Song, ...) content while playing the Origins to gain access to the items gained from finishing them.

I just now tried different things and it seems that an additional problem is that the game freezes when I try to level up any one in my party. I just tried to level Mheiri in Awakening and myself in Golems of Amggarak and the game froze altough the music keeps playing and Windows don't detect taht the game crashed. I can still resize the quickbar for some reason though.

I have to close game manually when this happens.

I'm still on Steam install. No mods.

    System specs:

    OS: Windows 7

    CPU: Intel Core(TM) i7, 2 cores, 2.67 GHz

    Memory: 8 GB

    Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M

  • Truly bizarre.  Something is obviously broken/severly bent on your install.

What results do you get if your search your drive for [ *.das ] ("dragon age save") files?

What are the contents of your "\Users\<username>\BioWare\Dragon Age\Characters" folder?

Should look something like this (I have the "named" characters Cadan and Davit):

Folder PATH listing for volume Diskname

    Volume serial number is 1A2B-3C4D

Do you see something significantly different?

I don't see anything radically different from what you showed here. That's how it looks for my old saves.

  • I got nothing else.

Never heard of this before.  I have doezens of characters, and GBs (yes, gigabytes) of saves for several of them,

Sure you're not running into a disc-space or absolute path+filename length (256 characters) limit?

Since I refuse to use Steam for any game that doesn't absolutely require it, if I were in this situation I'd do a complete un-/re-install using the EA/Origin version.  No charge, your product code is still vaild.

I'm positive that those are not an issue. On the more positive note the problem seems to have gone away. I don't know how but it did.
What I'm thinking is that the game, for some reason, couldn't access the save location. What the reason for this was I couldn't say because I changed nothing in that regard. I'm glad that the problem is gone though.
