Cole's Personal Quest Won't Start

I still have this issue :/ How do you fix this ! 

So this is still broken. I gave Cole the amulet and had the cut scene with the nurse trigger instead of the one with Solas and Varric and now it still says give Cole the Amulet. I have tried exhausting his conversation options and I have jumped back and forth to Skyhold numerous times. Now I am stuck since I cannot give him the amulet again to get the quest to work so it is impossible to complete now. Still broken after a year.

I would suggest waiting to do the Find Amulet for Cole operation until you have exhausted his other cutscenes and dialogue options. However, this is not always a guarantee from what I have experienced, but I have worked out potential solutions for the ones I have encountered.

If the game crashes before the cutscene starts, one of these might be the issue:

In some games, when you step onto the highest landing of the bar where Cole lurks, the wall behind Cole will flash red as the scenery loads. Being too far onto the landing or initiating dialogue when this happens can cause the game to crash.

To fix it, follow these instructions:

• Enter the bar through the adjacent tower, or when you reach the top of the stairs head immediately into the tower, turn back, and re-enter from the tower.
• Take only a few steps inside.
• Wait until the far wall flashes red as if the lighting in the room just changed.
• Once this happens, it should be safe to approach Cole and start the cutscenes.

If the above doesn't work, it might have to do with having maxed-out approval. Try this instead:

• Get an approval change with Cole through indirect means (i.e. A dialogue choice with another person, finishing a side quest, sitting in judgement). This does not have to be in Skyhold, it can be anywhere. It can be negative or positive, slight, standard, or great, and it doesn't have to flash on the side as saying so. If you read online that a specific dialogue choice will alter Coles approval but it doesn't because your rating with him is already maxed one way or the other, It will still work.
• From wherever the approval change happened, make your way to Cole without loading a save file. 
• You should be able to safely approach Cole and start the cutscenes, though it might take a few tries.

If neither of those work, I do not have a solution. However, if your game is crashing during or between the cutscenes, though I don't know why this happens, if you skip all the dialogue as quickly as you can, it should help prevent it from crashing.

Hi, I know this post is 10 years old but I ran into the same problem a couple minutes ago and I figured out why it happens.

The problem occurs when you push Cole into the next approval state by giving him the amulet. As soon as you give him the amulet, he gains approval. If this pushes him into the next state, he will instantly despawn for the courtyard cutscene. The way I solved this is by taking him into my party and helping some people in the Hinterlands by doing quests but there are other ways and regions that boost his approval fast.

Another thing I found in forums (I can not confirm this myself) is that if your approval is already super high to the point where he already loves you, this can also cause problems. If you never really talked to Cole to trigger any cutscenes other than the one for the amulet, you may have to find a way to lower his approval back down.

If you reach the next or previous approval stage this way, you can do the courtyard cutscene. Afterwards you can give him the amulet. I hope this helps the people who play this game still.
