Controlled character freeze during combat

Playing on Xbox One with GOTY edition. Oftentimes--maybe 25% of the time--a controlled character (not limited to the inquisitor) will freeze during combat, responding only to jumping. This occurs during both tactical camera and "action" modes. It usually leads to loss of a battle when that character is left unchecked, especially when it happens to the tank.

  • Sorry, I don't know much about Xbox...but I have heard there is a verify install files option that will check for errors with the game install.  Also a complete power down and console unplug for a min before restarting sometimes will help.  If neither of these things help, then I hope someone more versed with Xbox will post better ideas.

  • Yep.  Known issue.  Happens on PC too. (Although I've never had it happen anywhere close to 25% of the time!)

No fix except to "Check your chars!" and, as you said, make her/him "jump", then re-target as appropriate.

  • Do you have any of the "Trials" enabled in Options-Gameplay-Trials (accessable only from within the game once you've started)?  There are several options in there that can make your game more challenging, all of which contain a warning about "unpredictable behavior by characters during battle" (that's not an exact quote, but that's the gist of it).

This unpredictable behavior result's in characters, and sometime enemies, freezing during combat.  Enemies can be unfrozen by hitting them a few times, characters can be unfrozen by taking control of that character and either jumping (as you noted) or initiating an attack (with the PC by clicking the left mouse button).  After that the character is back to normal.

I personally have the trials: Even Ground (makes enemies level scale to be at least yours), Walk Softly (enemies can have unique abilities nor normally seen), and Grizzly End (makes bears tougher).  This results in more challenging encounters, as well as occasional loot in you chest in Skyhold (down by the crafting stations).  Because I'm aware of the freezing issue, I keep close watch on my characters during battle.  For me I accept the freezing issue because I like the increased challenge, and the fact that I will never run into a low level mob.  I always get experience points from a battle.  And I've never had the freezing issue happen more than once during any encounter.

So if you do have any of the "Trials" enabled, try disabling them and go back in game and see if that corrects the issue.  Years ago when I first played DAI I didn't have any Trials enabled and never had a freezing during combat issue.  You have to  weigh the pluses/minuses of the situation to find which game play experience you prefer.

While I am on a PC, I believe the Trials issue is universal across all platforms.
