DA2 suddenly won't start

I am suddenly having trouble getting DA2 to start.  I was playing it last night no problem, but today it won't start.  First, I cleared the cache in EA app since it was only showing to purchase - that loaded my games in.  Started the game, but that resulted in it opening up in a fairly small window with a message stating that another app was preventing it loading in full screen.  So, I closed it out, and next time I tried to play it, nothing happened.  Now the 'play' button is greyed out as if the game is running, but the game is most definitely not running.  It doesn't even show up in task manager so I can close it, which is how I've always fixed such problems with Steam games.

If anyone has some brilliant ideas, I'd greatly appreciate them!

Thanks! 🙂

  • @Sstgr Yeah, I saw a bunch of errors that revolved around Windows itself plus all the optional updates for drivers and whatnot. Go to town on updating everything at one time.

@Sstgr Can you try to get a screenshot of that error you had? I would like to see what it says.

Also, can you attach a DxDiag for me?

Hmm. Well, it is working again.  Not sure what the problem was... After I couldn't load DA2, I tried Mass Effect. Got an error on that one down the lines of 'Your game failed to launch. An error on our end caused your launch to fail.'  Unfortunately I see that message all too often. But after a forced logout via PC restart (couldn't log out of the app since DA2 was 'running'), everything seems to be working properly again.

So, it appears I no longer need help with this problem, but thanks for responding!

As an afterthought, you wouldn't, perchance, have any ideas why I get the failure to launch error so often?  The app is also constantly logging me out when I am in offline mode.  I wonder if all these problems it's been having may be related?

This is such a generic error that it is hard to narrow down the reason. I can provide all the steps and take a look at your dxdiag here in a bit and see what I can find. It is honestly a hard one.

I would like to ask though, Do any of the apply to your EA account?

    Recent purchases of any kind
    If so, did any fail?
Was or is an EA Play subscription on your EA or console account?
Have you made any type or refund?

I purchased Mass Effect last week, but that would be my only recent purchase.  No failed purchases or refunds either.  I also don't have EA Play.

The issues have been going on fairly frequently for the past couple months, though.  I almost always have to connect to the internet to start up a game when before I could just start them from offline mode.

    Thanks for helping with this!

@Sstgr Okay, took a look at the fle and I can see quite a few errors and issues happening. For now, this is what I suggest. I see registry and Windows OS errors.

Run the System File Checker tool.
I see quite a few Windows error reports happening

Check for Windows and GPU updates - Make sure ALL Windows updates and optional updates are completed.

Your GPU is very out of date. Download the latest drivers but make sure you do a fresh install so it deletes old ones

    • Install/Repair your VC++ files for the game (Microsoft VC++ Link) - I would uninstall these first but you don't have to.
    • Download and update DirectX

    Delete Windows Temp Files

    • First, make sure you close as many programs as you can
    • Press the Windows key + R, go into the file explorer
    • Type in %temp%, and hit Enter
    • Delete everything it allows you to delete
    • Reboot the PC

    Optional Registry clean-up

    • install CCleaner (it's free) from here
    • Run Registry cleaner
    • Click fix all
    • Do not back up files

After this, repair the game, or the EA App, or both if you please. Let me know what happens from here.

Nothing happens when I run the DISM or SFC command. So I skipped to updates - lots of driver updates available... Since you mentioned updates, I do recall that the problems started right after the last windows update.

Well, I tried your suggestions - at least the ones I could figure out, or would work. And I learned some new things today - I hadn't realized before that windows update doesn't actually install the latest drivers. Apparently, that 'up to date' notification doesn't actually mean a whole lot. Haha. Hopefully everything works properly now.

Thank you so much for the help!

You are most welcome. I hope you are able to jump in and play now.
