DAI: Could underclocking be a possible fix for crash and freezing?

Hi guys. It's been a long time since I have freezing and i tried any solution but the only thing which seems effective is underclocking, because with that I managed to play for a longer time.So all i need is to find the exact numbers for underclocking which keeps the gpu stable.because when I underclock it, the game starts to stutter and showing artifacts after a while. So if anyone is exprienced in under/overcloking plz tip me........

Thanks everyone for answers and I'm sorry for coming back you late cause I was away. I'll try to do this underclocking stuff more to learn more about it and the borderless screen just lengthen the time of the crashes but it freeze eventually.TY again

To reduce the speed of GPU and vRAM can solve several issue for various applications and circumstances.

Such issues often occur with retailer GPUs, who overclocking the card above the standard OEM (manufacturer) values.

However, there is no recipe to solve all your issues.

If you're doing trial&error underclocking to stabilize the GPU, start by comparing the clocks of your GPU with the original OEM hardware (see Nvidia/AMD page) to see the difference between your current clocks and the official Nvidia/AMD values.

Important: Always start with the vRAM to over/underclock. Take steps like 5-15 MHz and do a stress test.

Once you're satisfied with the stress test results, take a note of the vRAM clock rate and reset it to default.

Then Repeat these steps with your GPU clock

Once you're satisfied set the vRAM clock to you previously noted stable values and do 1 or 2 stress tests with both combined.

A good basic introduction with pictures you may review here:

  • Underclocking did not work for me - i took my card down to reference frequencies.  The only thing that worked for me was to switch out of full screen to borderless windowed mode selectible under the display option in the game submenu. Since switching I've yet to experience a crash or ctd.

Underclocking worked for me, but it doesn't seem to be a universal cure-all.  Very situational.

Mine is UC'd by 65 Mhz.  Depending on your speed and card, I'd say a 5% underclock, give or take, is probably enough to offset the crashes.  Don't underclock too much or you'll get the sort or preformance hitching that you seem to be experiencing.

If you haven't tried it yet, try using borderless windowed mode.

You should probably also focus on overhauling your cooling since it seems that your GPU and or VRAM are overheating. Hopefully it is enough to clean out all the dust and rearrange cables so airflow can move around more easily in the computer case, and check if the GPU fan is working at all, could have a broken fan controller so it never spins up even if it gets hot. Could try setting up a custom fanprofile in EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner, speedfan or similar and see if you can operate the fan that way. If that checks out ok perhaps consider replacing thermal paste.

Also do a virus and malware scan since there are bitcoin miner trojan/malware which uses the GPU to mine bitcoins.
