Dragon Age Inquisition won't start (PC)

Hi everybody, I know there already were posts about this but they are old (2015-2016) and I don't know if now there's a fix or it's still a problem. Here's what the problem is: - I login Origin...

    I've had many issues with AVG in the past when it comes to gaming. Several years ago it would minimize my Team Fortress 2 game window, and for those who don't know, Team Fortress 2 doesn't like being minimized. This resulted in issues from 2D assets being rendered on the wrong layer to big staircases appearing on the control point so I couldn't help my team win. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Avast is better (they recently bought AVG out), but the default Windows Defender should be more than enough if you employ common sense when browsing the internet with an ad blocker.

The DxDiag says this and I don't know why, but that is not the problem, every other program/game I run, it runs with the NVIDIA graphic card. I made sure that Dragon Age starts with NVIDIA card and it does, but it doesn't load anything, just a black window for 1-2 seconds then it disappears, it doesn't even reach the loading screen ๐Ÿค

I've no idea why, but it seems that AVG was the problem. I already put DragonAgeInquisition.exe in the exceptions, Origin too but when I put DragonAgeInquisition.par and dbdata.dll in the exceptions, the game worked.

So the problem is resolved but how? What was the point, why AVG did this?

      I have logged over 192 hours playing DAI, but haven't played in the last 18 months. When I tried playing today I got the same problem [black screen for 1-2 secs then window closed]. I also tried the common solutions, but Fred_vdp led me to the one that worked for me. My problem was all of the patches done by Avast. I added DAI to the exclusions list and now it works fine.

      For those who don't know how to add an exclusion, here are the steps.

      1-open the Avast User Interface

      2- Open the Settings/General

      3- Scroll down to Exclusions

      4-Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\   and select the box for Dragon Age Inquisition

      5-You may have to Click on the Add button  to add the game to Exclusions.

      6-Click OK and you are all set to go.

      I hope this works for you as well as it did for me.

        @MRStargazer thanks so much for the assist and the exclusion assist with AVAST. DAI works perfectly now.

    I had the same problem.

    After reading through this thread I added not only the C:\ProgramData\Origin\LocalContent folder to the exceptions, but also the entire C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\ folder to the exceptions in AVG and it seems to have solved the problem.

    Can you explain me how you did it?I have the same problem, i talked with 3 EA operators and they couldn't help me.. i don't know what to do

      Howdy, 

      Just one more thing to add to all of this. I had the same symptoms of the black screen coming up and then shutting down. I bought the game in December and am just getting to play it today which is June 27....I had tried repairing, reinstalling, turning off firewalls, checking all systems, updating drivers, ensuring system compatibility, starting the game from driver related apps, allowing exceptions, tech support, forums, editing the program files along with every tip and trick I could find. 3 months of trying resulted in absolutely no ability to play.

      What finally fixed it was removing Malwarebytes and Avast off of my computer and restarting, after that - game played fine. I had one crash after about 10 minutes but I restarted the game and it has been fine since. 

      I completely understand how this was a pain in the back side so I figured I would pass along my fix.

        Ok, I just started having the same problem, only disabling my antivirus program DIDN'T help. I was literally playing it earlier today and everything was working fine, but then I went back to play it again and it won't work. I started by disabling my antivirus (AVG) like I always do and started the game. The black box popped up, but then disappeared and my Origin window opened. I don't know what's going on here, but I assume Origin is interfering in some way because it's definitely not my antivirus. What do I do now? I'm stumped. โ˜น๏ธ

    This info on the AVG solution was very helpful to me.  I was having the same issue and just launched AVG, went to where I had my Dragon Age Inquisition installed and I put exceptions on those mentioned files.  Yet another thanks from a happy gamer.

    Hey! This helped me so much! The only difference for me was that I had to put the whole download file in the exceptions. But it was AVG. I appreciate you're thread ๐Ÿ™‚
