DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG error in Dragon Age: Inquisition

So, "Dragon Age: Inquisition" crashes often -- usually during cutscenes or when I'm at the war table, but it'll do it any old time without much of a pattern -- and I get this error message:

DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is an design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed. "). GPU: "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 ", Driver: 34475

I've been poking around these forums and trying some of the tips I find -- turning off ambient occlusion (stuttery, looks like garbage, still crashes), trying windowed fullscreen (crashes to a white screen about as frequently), most of the things short of serious, above-my-comfort level fiddling -- but with no success. I tried using the GeForce Experience program too. Didn't work. My PC meets or exceeds the system requirements, and I have the latest drivers. And I don't have my rig set up to overclock or anything like that. At least I think I don't. The new patch didn't help much either. But it was nice for NPCs to stop using feminine pronouns when referring to my male dwarf.

If anyone's had more luck, or I missed something, I'd appreciate any help. At the very least, I'd like some word as to whether Bioware, EA or NVIDIA are working toward a solution. I figure this might be a way to let them know.

  • Has anyone found a concrete fix to this yet?  I just picked up the game today and I'm getting the same message.  I'm running a GTX1070 GPU and even when I turn the graphics down to medium I get crash after crash.  This is driving me crazy!

  • DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is an design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed.") GPU: "AMD Radeon RX 6800", Driver: #1 27.20.14501.18003 13.11.2020 01:00:00 #2 27.20.14501.18003 13.11.2020 01:00:00

Getting also the error when I play a last game and fast travel to anywhere on the map.

So BioWare did a * job again with their code, because the error says the application fuc*ed up, not DirectX or the Drivers.

Still no fix after 4 years?

  • Since relatively few people have this error, and that AMD 6800 is brand new tech, along with a brand new driver, I would lean more toward it being an issue of 6 year old game trying to run on something it could never have been designed to run on.  Corrupted saves, mods, and a bunch of other issues can all cause this.  So most likely wait a bit and get a new driver and it will likely fix this if you haven't gotten a corrupted save.  Does it crash on all saves, other characters or is it strictly with this character??

Tried different AMD Drivers, also the Optional one.

Turned off OC settings for the GPU. (Maybe the game can't handle factory clock times above >2000Mhz on both GPU and Memory on the 6XXX Series)

    Fullscreen / Windowed Fullscreen

The crash happens only than I fast travel to Skyhold from any region.

But loading a save from Skyhold works fine, but again leaving Skyhold, and fast travel back to Skyhold again crashes the game.

Didn't use any mods for this game, only used SweetFX many years ago, but this time running it on a clean Windows and Game install.

I'm currently playing a new character, didn't get to skyhold yet. Lets see if the save game is corrupted or a driver issues.
