Game Crashing on Skyhold Load Screen

Inquisition is crashing to th desktop every time i try to go back to Skyhold. It works fine until I try to travel to Skyhold, then it crashes on the loading screen. This doesn't happen when I try to travel to other zones and there is no error message.

CPU: Core i7 2600k

RAM 8Gb DDR3

@KeraKitty OK, wow... Your Nvidia drivers are from 2014. Those need updating desperately. The DLC combined with your old drivers could have something to do with your issues (or nothing), but regardless, you should update them. Nvidia drivers can be found here. (You have a GeForce 500 Series and need drivers for Windows 7 64 bit). If you install the Nvidia GeForce experience, it will let you know when there are new drivers available as well as suggesting what settings are ideal for your games with your card.

So try updating your drivers, see if that works.

Also, try repairing the game (just because it's always a good thing to try when there's a problem). Right click the game in Origin, select 'repair game'. Should only take a couple of minutes.

If it still crashes, try lowering some graphics settings, see if that helps.

If not, we'll try to think of something else.

I'm not sure if your dxdiag cut off or if you just have never had any errors to be reported, but I guess it doesn't really matter. Nothing else really stands out at me (though I do seem to be missing glaringly obvious things at the moment).

  • Hi @KeraKitty, instead of an outline of your specs (which gives us very limited information), could you please post a dxdiag? There are instructions on how to do so in the spoiler in this sticky. Thanks 🙂

Is this any time you travel to Skyhold, or just the first time? I'm guessing it's any time from your post, but best to double check.

If you're using mods, have you tried removing them, seeing if that fixes the issue?
Have you tried lowering some of your graphics settings? Sometimes this can help with many issues in this game.

  • Here's the DxDiag link: http://hastebin.com/ijipisetup.tex

I'm not running any mods, and it is any time I try to go to Skyhold. I've tried hopping around to other places and then going, but the same thing happens. The issue did start after installing Deep Roads DLC, but I was able to play normally for a few sessions after installing it.

I'll try the graphics options next time I launch, but I've finished the game a few times without turning the settings down. Not sure why they would start causing a problem over a year down the line.

  • Wow. I did not realize I was that out of date. Yeah, that's probably the issue lol. Well I feel stupid XD.

It's easy to forget these things. I didn't realise until recently that I hadn't updated my windows since August (because it tried to update then and failed). Oops 😛 Thankfully it's still not nagging me to upgrade to Windows 10, so yay 😛 I was using a Nvidia card until recently, I found the GeForce experience helpful for reminding me about drivers (as I have memory issues at the moment, being reminded is good), I kind of miss it now I've got an AMD 😛

Hopefully sorting your problem is as easy as a driver update 😉

  • Turns out it is that easy. Thanks for the help. Here's hoping they don't force that "upgrade" on you.
