Game freezes at the tavern in Skyhold after Here lies the Abyss

Hello guys I'm posting here to report a bug.

I've just completed the Here lies the Abyss quest line, and now, whenever I'm trying to go into the tavern in Skyhold, the game freezes and I can't do anything except rolling the camera. It always happens a few steps after entering the tavern and it's the only place in Skyhold or in the other maps where I encounter this bug.

The only way to quit the game is to close it manually or to return to the main menu.. It's weird because prior completing this main quest, I didn't have any problems. And it's pretty annoying because for example after the dialog cutscene in which Blackwall brings you to the tavern, I'm stuck at the bar and the game freezes again. So I can't talk to him anymore ( as well as to Sera, Cole, and Iron Bull since they are IN the tavern, preventing them from giving me their personal quests ...)

Has someone already encountered something alike or has any idea how to fix this bug ?

Thank you in advance

PS : I'm running the game with the patch 11

I've done as you said and it works ! Even if my character has from now on horrible eyebrows I can re-enter the tavern. Thank you Niah_Dark !

Honestly, I don't fully understand how mere "cosmetic" mods can cause this kind of problems ...

But to get my game to work, I had to  remove my entire folder, so I think I will now try to identify more specifically which ones are responsible for the freezing of the tavern, because it annoys me to have to abandon all my pretty haircuts ...

Here is a list of all the mods I use, maybe you're using some of them too @Mysticfeline :

  • Are you on PC? If so, have you tried doing a repair of the game? (Right click the game in Origin, click 'repair').
If that hasn't helped, please post a dxdiag.

Out of curiosity, are all the people/objects in the tavern loading correctly? Are sounds playing (such as the bard singing, background conversations)? Mine tends to get stuck for a few seconds while it loads everyone up, then continues on as normal.

    Thanks for answering.

Yes, I'm on PC. I've tried repairing the game, but sadly, it didn't fix anything ...

And it's like you said, mine used to get stuck a few seconds too while it was loading the area up, like the people or the objects around. The problem is that now, it's doesn't end and remains blocked. The only sounds I hear are the background conversations between the NPCs. The same "Yes, that's why." from one of them was repeating endlessy the last time I tried and the game generally freezes before the bard begins to sing. And sometimes I can see Krem or the bard, whereas sometimes they haven't been "loaded" yet when I enter the tavern.

Oh, and I've already tried to load a previous save and re-do the quest, but the game still freezes ...

I'm currently posting a dxdiag like it's explained on your link.

You need to post a link to the dxdiag file here in order for us to see it 😉

Also, out of curiosity, are you using any mods?

Oh, yes, of course, in fact I was wondering if I had to post it on another specific thread but I'm going to just copy/paste it here:

    http://hastebin.com/uxeqokohed.tex

And that's right I use mods to customize my character's and companions' appearance but since they worked fine until now, I didn't think they could be responsible for the freezing of my game.

@Bibise1 If you're using too many mods, it could be too much for the game to load up on your computer (I know mine has slowed down quite a bit... there are just so many pretty hairs, I want all the people to have them 😛 ). I'm assuming, since this is the first issue you've had, that your Radeon GPU is set up to run the game, not the Intel?

First thing I'd try is lowering some graphics settings, see if that helps. If it doesn't, try removing your mod folder. If that fixes it, create a new mod merge with less cosmetic mods. If that doesn't fix it... Come back and surely I or someone else will have more ideas. 😛

When I remove the Patch_ModManagerMerge folder from the Update folder in the "Origins games : Dragon Age Inquisition" folder in my "Program Files" section, and then try to load my save, it says that my data were created with a more recent version of the game and that I need to download the last update first before I can play again so I can't check if it works or not ... Sorry, but is there something I'm doing wrong ?

@Bibise1 In the same folder (the Update folder) you need to go into the Patch folder, open the file package.mft with notepad and change the line that says "Version 12" to "Version 13". The mod folder tricks the game into thinking it's an update, so that the game will load your modded content, and the game won't load a save created with a higher patch version than what you're running.
Just remember to change the package.mft folder back before putting your mod folder back or doing a new mod merge. 🙂

I seem to be having the same problem with it freezing in the tavern. I also had the same kind of freezing on a different save whenever I entered the East Road in the Hinterlands. I poked around with my mods for a bit and found that just reducing the overall amount of mods enabled doesn't make a difference. However, when I disabled a couple of mods that had been added more recently the freezing stopped and I was able to fully enter the tavern and still keep my mods. I'll have to play around with it more and see if I can pinpoint which mod(s) specifically are causing the problem.

    @Bibise1

With hair mods (I have so, so many), it's helpful to sort them into which mesh they replace, so you can make sure you don't use multiple mods for the same mesh (they'll likely just overwrite each other, but still it's best to just... not make extra work for mod manager). All your Kadust, hot fish and Milabanila ones, and the Kori C one, are fine, as far as I can tell. I don't have the others and they don't make it obvious what mesh they replace, so I'll leave it to you to check. This is a helpful post to check which mods replace which meshes, she tends to keep it up to date as much as possible.

The Skara hair texture should be fine everywhere except DLC areas. And remember, if any other hair has its own texture built in, whichever is further down in mod manager will overwrite the other texture.

You seem to be using a few PJ mods, are you sure they're using different PJ slots? I don't think I've used any of those particular ones or the light armour thing, so I can't vouch for their compatibility.

I've never had an issue with elvici's companion mods (and she just writes the best descriptions 😛 ), though I haven't used them all.

I think I've used those eyebrows before, too, and didn't have an issue.

I use way, way more mods than that, and don't have an issue (although sometimes when I go beyond ridiculous numbers of mods, the game does slow down a bit, not surprising given my computer specs aren't that great).

On your list, I haven't used Holy Moley Josie, Classic Cassandra with scar (I use Classic Cassandra without a scar, I think), Dalish Outerwear, Dalish_light_armour, EF Everknit Dalish PJs, or the two Aileani hairs. If you suspect there's a certain mod causing issues, I'd check these first. 😉
