I've had this happen a few times. The problem with mine was that the sound switched to HDMI (to my monitor) for some reason. Try clicking on your speaker icon->mixer->device->? then to whatever sound you typically use. For me it says "speakers." For you it might be a sound card or something. This may be unrelated, but it fixed my issue.
