[PC] CTD CTD CTD - No Error (Updated 02/01/2015)

I'm aware and read through the numerous complains of crash to desktop with no error. Just decided to add another post for the devs so that they know that this crash is really ruining the gameplay experience for many of your customers.

The crash started on the 2nd day after I started to play the game. I waited a few days before playing because I'm aware of the many issues at launch day. Hopefully, devs would do something to minimize the issues. Well, they didn't manage.

After 2 patches this crash is still prevalent. I have tried most method proposed or recommended by the community. I even Google "CTD", "crash desktop no error" or "crash crash crash crash FIX" every day to see whether anyone has a turnaround or solution to this game breaking issue.

The following are what I have tried to minimize or fix the crashes:-

1. Disable Geforce Experience. The game crashes more often when Experience is enabled. However, the game still crash.

2. If you have Teamviewer, you know you can't play this game in Fullscreen. Window Borderless works but disabling Teamviewer prolong gameplay until the next crash.

3. Underclocking GPU and CPU. Done. In my observation, there is no difference on whether you underclock your hardware. Still. God. Dayum. Crash.

4. Overclocking CPU and GPU. I know this is not a recommended method but I decided to try it. No harm to test. Perhaps it could fix or minimize the crash. It did not.

5. Tweaking graphics setting. Set all to Medium, High or Ultra (shutters badly but playable but not until crash). Crash 99.

6. Enabling & disabling Anti-aliasing. I know this is a part of the graphics setting but many claimed that disabling this would fix the crash. Nope.

7. Re-installing DA:I. Gameplay lasted nearly an hour before CTD spree.

8. Latest graphics card driver. Yep, checked daily for newer driver.

9. Updated with patch and hotfix. Needless to say I check daily

Probably some other methods that I may have tried but I can't recall it for now.

I didn't try to re-install graphics driver. I have a slow internet connection and this is one of the last thing I would do. On second thought, I would do this when I get home from work because this is the last thing and only method I can do as my patience are wearing thin.

And no, I didn't try reformatting Windows. Are you kidding me? Reset my whole computer for one game?

Sometimes I could play 1 - 2 hours continuously without issue. But when the crash happens, it becomes more and more frequent (5 - 10 mins) until it is unplayable or I presist on restarting the game until it doesn't crash.

Look, I work in a stressful office job and I just want to play a game peacefully when I get home. When game repeatedly crash halfway through, it not only tests my patience, it is extremely frustrating. Like many, I have waited this game for a long time to release and waited days after release to play. So, please, devs, get your game right and ease the ever rising frustration and disappointment of your customers

Lastly, my specifications (if it matters, which I doubt):-

Geforce Asus GTX 760 card

AMD A8 3870K CPU (Quad 3.0 Ghz)

8gb RAM

some mobo that supports the above

Windows 8, 64 bit

Directx 11

EDIT 1:

Also tried:-

1. http://swtorcommando.blogspot.com/2013/01/crash-to-desktop-workaround.html; and

2. GameBooster.

Both didn't help.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT 2 (see Post/Message 21):-

1. Roll back nVidia graphics driver to 344.65 and uninstall all unnecessary Geforce programs like Audio and 3D. Go to the nVidia website and download the previous version of the driver - 344.65. The size of the file is about 300mb. Choose custom installation. Uncheck for all boxes except for the driver and Physx. This will ensure all the said Geforce programs are fully uninstalled. If you manually uninstall the said programs, it will just roll back to previous versions. Take note of the following:-

  • This will not remove the CTD but merely prolong gameplay before the next crash.
  • You may have uninterupted play for several hours until the CTD kicks in. Once it starts, CTD will be more frequent.

Credits to middlefngrsalute. Go and +1 experience for all his posts.

2. Closing all overlay programs. Yes, many suggested this and it is true. Got Teamviewer on? Close it. Got Steam on? Close it also. Got GameBooster on? Alt-F4. Close all overlay programs until only Origin left. If you CTD at the menu, it is most likely caused by overlay programs.

3. Avoid or minimize Alt-Tab out of the game to Desktop. Alt-Tabbing will hasten CTD. But if you happen to have something to do in desktop, try what middlefngrsalute has suggested: "running in windowed full screen, or run in a small window (i.e. 1024x768)". It helps but still causes CTD if you go on a Alt-Tab spree. =/

4. Playing in Windowed Fullscreen. It is all the forum and it does help although CTD's still happen but not as often when you play in Fullscreen. If you have problem opening the game in Fullscreen, use Windowed Fullscreen. It will definitely help.

5. Changing Windowed Fullscreen (WF) > Fullscreen or Windowed in gameplay > Windowed Fullscreen. This may or may not work. In between gameplay (every 10 - 15 mins), change from WF to Fullscreen or Windowed. I know, it is annoying but better than CTD every 10 - 15 mins.

EDIT 3: See my latest post at message/post 34. Possibly found a permanent fix to CTD!

    @pegiiz

So, as of today, did you manage to survive a 2 - 3 gameplay without a crash?

I have an update. And it is a good one. So, for many of you who have followed my thread, you know that I did not come up with a permanent solution to the CTD.

I have updated my BIOS on Wednesday (31/12/2014) and have played the game the whole night with ZERO crashes (6 - 7 hours) and of course, 01/01/2015 is a holiday and I spent the whole day playing the game too. Good news! ZERO crashes too. I split my play in 3 sessions throught the day. 5 hours starting in the morning, another 4 hours in noon and 3 hours at night. Yes, no crash, no shutter, no freezing and no problem. The game play was smooth as silk.

The last time I updated my BIOS was...erm....never! :D I used the driver from the installation out of the box (of which the driver is from year 2010). I did not, however, tweaked the graphic settings and overclock anything (yet) but I will later on when I have time to run further tests. You may give suggestions in ways to test.

I know this may be "luck", so, I stress tested the game. The places in game that I crash the most is the Foundry (?) - the place where you craft gears in Skyhold, the War Table, during conversation and cutscenes. Yes. Not. One. Crash. (Yay)

I will come back with more updates in a couple of days. If the update-BIOS-fix works, I will mark this thread as Solved.

So, I ask for your help in testing by updating your BIOS and see whether you game is crash-free. There will be complication in updating your BIOS. Read the instruction here before going ahead:-

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c00007682

Quote: "if an incorrect update is installed or if the update process is interrupted, the motherboard can be permanently damaged, leaving the computer unable to boot." However, if you follow the instructions closely, you may "fix" the CTDs and also (as a bonus) improve the performance of your system! My machine is running smoothly, FYI.

See you guys again in a few days! <3

  • Again, thanks for the update!

But...I updated my BIOS and got a *new* error. After about ten minutes of playing, my computer completely shut down. That's something that has never happened before, and now I'm afraid to boot up the game at all. (Before it would just CTD with no error after around 20 minutes.)

My specs again, just in case someone can point to something and say "ah-ha!":

    Windows 8.1

    Motherboard: MSI A75MA-G55 (MS-7696)

CPU: AMD A8-3870 (quad core, 3.0 GHz)

    GPU: GTX 660

    RAM: 16GB DDR3

    650W PSU

Edit: It looks like updating my BIOS did something wonky, because my PC is shutting off during any game I play, so it's not just DA:I. Resetting back to factory settings now.

Don't know about you guys, but before patch, i had zero crashes, after patch i get ctd with no error, but that is random, can play a game for an hour and ctd, or play a whole day, travel to many places and no crash, then go to inventory and boom, you are at desktop. My guess, there is problem with memory leak in game

    gtx 660.

known issue with _60 series cards having a pattern of problems.

it is known that gtx 460,560, 660, 760, etc cards including Ti versions are having more difficulty

with this game than other cards.

having read through many, many posts of pc issues, and having GTX 760's in my system, I have

asked tech support about it, and they confirmed that there is a pattern of _60 series cards

having issues with the game more than other series. And was told that the studio is looking

into this, and working with nvidia to resolve it.

@Keataclysm: No worries, it was worth a try 🙂 I reset my BIOS and all is back to normal.

@middlefngrsalute: Thanks for the heads up! I guess I'll wait for the next patch/driver and cross my fingers.

  • Update: I was able to play for 2.5 hours tonight, which is the longest I've been able to play, by far. Surprised the hell out of me.

    The things I changed:

    • Reset my motherboard to factory settings (by removing the battery for a minute)
    • Took some canned air to my PC's guts while I was in there (it wasn't very dusty, and my temps are all the same as before, so I doubt this had anything to do with it, but who knows!)
    • Installed NVIDIA driver 347.09
    • Ran "Repair Game" in Origin
    • Left Origin in online mode

I'll play more tomorrow night and report back if I get the CTD again. Otherwise, I guess one of those steps magically fixed it.
