Has no one any ideas on this... Surely there has to be more people with this problem?

Just to update this incase anyone else has had the same problem. After a lot of messing about it turned out to be the most simple thing, something I should have tried from the beginning. It turns out DAO and DA2 do not like Kensington Trackballs. I swapped out for a standard Logitec laser mouse that I had lying around and all worked.
The interesting part is... If you load the games with a standard mouse plugged in, and then once the main menu is loaded up - swap back to the trackball; all works beautifully. So obviously there is a problem initialising the trackball at some point.
