Wait, you don't need the Arcanist to upgrade your gear, only to create "Enchantments" ("Runes".)

The other improvements you apply to your armour and weapons yourself (well, lore-wise it's the Smith doing it, but really it's you, the player) using the appropriate "upgrade" table.

    And I believe masterworks as well. Those can be pretty cool.
