I should have mentioned up front that I don't have any antivirus installed (I should actually do that now that I think of it...), but for playing around in the firewall settings, are there particular ones to watch out for that seem to bother Origin more than other applications? I've had no problems with Steam or UPlay or other services before, but Origin always seems to give me problems.

Could you try downloading the game while in Safe mode with networking?

I will try to do that once I'm home, though I'm stuck at work for a while longer.

In the meantime, anyone else who reads this and has the same issue, feel free to try that and let us know if it helps at all.
