Unreadable disc error

I bought a used copy of Dragon Age Inquisition for my Xbox 360 Slim, and also had to buy a 250Gb hard drive to install it. During the install process it kept asking me to put in the play disc and installation disc over and over but eventually managed to get it installed. I created a character, played a few hours then got bored and decided to reroll. During the character creation process I kept getting unreadable disc errors and after about 5 tries I managed to start a new character. After this the game became riddled with unreadable disk errors. I order to have any attempt at playing I have had to save every couple of minutes, and even then the error could occur at any point. I could reload several times and I would get the error repeatedly and unexpectedly. Now it is at the stage where I can't even play the game because it keeps coming up with this error.

I have cleaned the disc, bought and used a disc lens cleaner, and even bought another (new) copy of the game and I still get the error. This doesn't happen with any of my other games, including Dragon Age 2.

This is really frustrating, not least because I have spent more money trying to fix this, but also because I have a worthless game essentially. I was only a few hours in but I was really loving this game. I have searched for answers but found nothing. I have even reinstalled the game but still no luck. I have seen many other forums where people are having the same issue.

What is going on and what is being done about it???

  • Unfortunately, support was stopped for the last gen consoles at around patch 8, likely due to the overwhelming number of issues the game had on these consoles. The final patch (patch 11) has been released for all other systems, there are no plans to release more content for this game on any platform.

Comparing Inquisition to Dragon Age 2 is irrelevant, they use different engines, Inquisition requires better hardware in order to run properly.

When you purchased the new copy of the game, did you uninstall the previous (likely bugged) installation and install the game fresh? (If you don't know how to do this, I suggest either googling or hoping someone else comes along who knows about consoles, as I have no idea).

Sorry you've encountered such frustrating issues, as a PC gamer I can relate 😉

Disc or disk? Or both? The word disc is generally used for optical discs, like a BluRay, whereas a disk can refer to a mass storage device.

If the game is already installed to the hard drive, I don't think cleaning the BluRay disc will have any effect.

Are all those other games installed to the same hard drive?

You may want to try and clear the System Cache:

To clear the system cache. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. (It doesn't matter which storage device you select; the cache will be cleared for all storage devices.)

This worked for me to get through one area (in the Hinterlands) although the disk read error still popped up during a different battle.  Very frustrating that it happens and that there is a significant lack of support on the issue.

Just as an update to my clearing the system cache post - I reinstalled the game after the disc read error repeatedly in the same spot.  I deleted all the Dragon Age files, keeping the profile and saved game files.  After the re-install, I got over two hours of error free game play, only stopping because I needed to - not because of any errors.  Hope this helps!
