[Feedback] Veilguard needs a Prologue DLC (Unlikely, I know)

I know Bioware has said there are no plans for  DLC, but this game could really use an extended prologue. It doesn't hurt putting the idea out there. I think this could help resolve two of the more consistent critiques the game has (not related to writing): 1. People's inability to connect with Rook and 2. What happened to the agents of Fen'Harel.

Some thoughts on what could be included:

  1. Rook's backstory as a playable mission
  2. Varric's recruitment of Rook
  3. Their first missions tracking Solas where they encounter his agents
  4. Fen'Harel second in command as final boss fight
  5. More Solas (lol, some may disagree and think there's already too much)
  6. Players learn how Solas was able to cleanse the red lyrium idol

Then the DLC ends right before the events of the beginning of Veilguard. Being able to play Rook's backstory would really help players connect to them more, this is something I've struggled with personally and have seen mentioned on many forums. This would also give players more opportunity to develop the Rook - Varric relationship that the game tells us they have, giving a bigger impact to the role he plays in the game. Doing a few missions with the agents of Fen'Harel involved would help bridge the gap between what was set up in Trespasser/Tevinter Nights and really just enhance the story we already get in Veilguard.

Happy to hear others thoughts.

  • I think a lot of the gaps between the two games could be filled with tie-in materials, just like how the novels The Masked Empire and Asunder set up a lot of stuff in Inquisition. I think it's a bit curious that we didn't get any of that in the buildup to Veilguard. I figured the animated series on Netflix would serve that purpose, but as it turns out, it didn't.

While I don't think every story detail needs to be explained, I think building on the friendship between Varric and Rook could really be valuable, since we're informed about their friendship but I never really felt it.

Yes that's a good point too! If not a playable DLC, some other type of material to fill in the gaps would be appreciated. I definitely agree the relationship between Rook and Varric needs to be expanded on. I know Varric from the prior games. But why does Rook view him so highly and see him as a mentor? It would be great to develop that relationship ourselves. Especially for new players if Veilguard is their first DA game. Why would they care about Varric from 5 minutes of conversation?

  • A DLC that adds more companion missions and "outings" would be just as good. Reason being all the companions share a faction from Rook's potential backstory, so there could be a greater emphasis on that interaction with Rook's backstory through dialogue and quests.

Although a prologue origin story like dlc sounds like a cleaner more likely approach to something like that, because a prequel can do more efficient correction and plot filling than add-on content later in the game.

More companion content would be great as well! Developing the companion relationships would also help peoplw connect to Rook in a way and have Rook feel like less of an outsider. I could definitely see a faction specific mission where Rook and that companion have to return and clean up some sort of follow up mess due to Rook's history and they can talk about what happened. I really liked the idea of a prologue to help develop more of what the game throws at us right at the beginning. Rook and Varric are close, okay how? Solas cleansed the lyrium idol, okay how? We're told a lot, and then it's never mentioned again!

Yeah I'm currently on my first playthrough as Lord of Fortune, and would love to explore that background a lot more in quests, or even in just more conversations with the relevant characters.

....although regarding the lyrium idol, I think it's implied that Solas used parts of Mythal's soul fragments to get his "god" powers back, and therefore able to cleanse the idol, resulting in the dagger.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's great to see your passion for the game and your ideas on what could enhance the experience for yourself and other players I like that it has sparked some discussion amongst the other players as well. Your perspective on Rook's backstory and the inclusion of more missions with the agents of Fen'Harel is really interesting. I appreciate the effort you put into detailing your suggestions and the impact they could have on the story and character relationships. One of the reasons I play an RPG is character development and building relationships with other characters.

    Best regards and happy gaming!
