Game is constantly crashing to desktop and crashing steam

I've seen people with similar complaints but I've yet to see anyone with a solution. At this point, I'm convinced it's an issue with the actual game and the only way for the crashes to stop is for Bioware to release a patch and address the issue.

The game originally ran fine for me but 2 days after release the game just started randomly crashing to desktop. No error or anything. It also crashes steam as well and I am unable to relaunch steam or any other app, instead I get the message, "this app is unable to run on your PC." Everything is fixed once I restart my PC. At this point, the game crashes anywhere from 1 min in to maybe 30 mins, on medium settings if I'm lucky, and maybe 10 mins max on high settings. The game used to run perfectly for me on high settings with no issues on release.

I have an AMD graphics card and CPU that are above the recommended requirements. I have tried playing this game on steam deck and while the FPS sucks and I have to use low settings, there are no crashes.

I have tried everything including:

  • uninstalling and reinstalling the game
  • verifying game files
  • both deleting shader cache and restoring it
  • uninstalling and reinstalling steam
  • updating my graphic drivers and chipset
  • updating my BIOS
  • resetting my BIOS settings to default
  • both enabling and disabling XMP
  • completely uninstalling and reinstalling windows
  • enabling DLSS
  • lowering game settings and turning off hair stand

...and more that I probably can't even remember right now. I have spent hours trying to find a fix. At this point I don't even expect anyone to have a solution but I'm making this post so EA and Bioware are aware of this constant, random crashing that is making the game that I spent $80 on unplayable.

  • You're definitely not alone. Many people can't play the game due to constant crashing, including me. My rig has a GTX 4090, i9 processor, and 32gb of memory. Veilguard was running perfectly with all settings on ultra with 120 fps UNTIL the first patch. Now, like you're experiencing, it crashes within minutes of loading in. So, I urge you and everyone else to stop tweaking your setups, software, and hardware. It's not your computer, it's the game.

And it's absolutely unacceptable that EA/Bioware hasn't said so much as a peep since the forums started blowing up about the issue. I've pretty much put the game down. Can't return it since, after six days of unobstructed gameplay, I've got 80 hours in. I was on the fence about buying the game after what happened with Andromeda, and I should've listened to my gut. I want to play Veilguard, but it's so broken that it's impossible to enjoy.

  • This is why I started getting so annoyed when people kept leaping on the "ItS yOuR hArDwArE" train or keep saying "They're probably working on it!"

No, it's not, a hardware issue, and we have 0 evidence that they are working on a fix. Hell, idk why they even have EA_Illium as a "community manager" if they aren't going to, you know, manage the community. I don't get why you wouldn't have something like a bug dashboard or even a pinned thread that lists out bugs and current statuses.

I've never seen a company of this size have this little communication so shortly after launch with such severe issues. All they're doing right now is making people more mad for no reason when they could just......comment on the issues?

It makes it seem real shady and makes me think more and more that they might not actually have any fix and that it's an issue inherent to Frostbite Engine that won't ever be resolved. I'd like to hope that's wrong, but.......radio silence

I too have the DirectX error, as well as the nvldmmk event viewer errors. As soon as I close the game after it crashes I get a full system lock up, the weird part is if you look at the crash dumps in windbg it shows as an NT error code which is GPU driver communication, and ive seen other people post their crash dumps with constant mention of Denuvo token timeout strings, despite the game not having Denuvo. Very odd.

The most damning evidence is this error goes back years with the EXACT same error code in multiple frostbite engine games. So I highly doubt its hardware and if it is its certain configurations causing driver communication errors.

Agreed...it's really quite insane that there's been no "official" response.  I installed first a few days after release.

I spent about an hour creating my Rook and Inquisitor, then played the actual game for about 30 minutes before it crashed.  Didn't think anything of it...until I could essentially no longer launch the game.  I can uninstall, reinstall, get shaders verified, and attempt to load saves, but the game crashes before the save fully loads.  After each crash, I can attempt to start the game again, and it seems to begin loading...but simply crashes back to desktop.

I've tried a few minor fixes, but nothing "drastic" outside of updating my BIOS.  In reality, that shouldn't be necessary at all.  I'm not going to make wholesale changes to my setup in order to play the game.  It's ridiculous.

Exactly. No one should be making these kinds of changes and temporary (if they even work) fixes to play a game. It played fine before either of the patches and is unplayable now. All my other games in Steam play without issues.

Yep.. I was crashing before the first patch but it was every few hours, so I didn't mind THAT much since I still got a good 50 hours of progress. For the past week though (after the first patch) I can't play for more than 2 minutes without crashing. I can sometimes get 10 minutes if I'm lucky but that's still ridiculous. I've given up for now, and as someone who was looking forward to this game for years & pre-ordered it and everything, I'm extremely heartbroken about it. I truly hope that Bioware/EA aren't ignoring us. I want to be patient, but there's a difference between simple bugs vs an actual inability to play the game.

Update post patch 3: Game is still crashing. Patch doesn't seem to have fixed anything for me.

it made my crashes happen during the loading screen instead of in game.

Same here. Not sure if I should just wait until the next patch because it's been frustrating trying to just get the game to load after doing everything suggested.
