Jumping problem on PC?

Love the game, but there is one specific thing I have problems with. Jumping across gaps and up ledges/boxes/platforms. Maybe 90% of the time I have no problems. But every once in a while I just can't make the proper jump. I just end up hopping up and down over and over until suddenly it seems to work. What am I doing wrong?  (I'm running the game through Steam)
