Steam Deck Constant Crashes

I can't get more than 5 minutes into the game without it crashing. It took me almost 2.5 hours to get through the character creator and get a continue file. I have tried different proton versions, deleting the shader cache, updating the steam deck, moving every graphical setting to its lowest - and nothing. I can start the file, but I can only play for 2-5 mins at a time, and then it crashes the whole deck anyway.
This is genuinely unplayable. I'm past the two hour mark on steam after trying so many different ways to fix these issues, so now so I can't even get a refund.
If anyone has any other ideas or solutions, please please let me know. Short of disassembling the deck, I'll try anything!

  • Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I went through the links you sent and unfortunately nothing new I tried helped. I had everything set to low graphics, but I had it set manually for each option because I still wanted strand hair on, and using low/medium presets removed the option to toggle it. Good news is that today when I tried the game again, I set it to low using the preset option, and actually that seems to have fixed it somewhat. I've managed to play the game without it crashing for over an hour now.

I've fiddled with more settings, and I can even run the game on a medium preset. I actually think it's specifically the strand hair setting that causes the issue, at least for the most part? It crashed when I turned it on, even when I kept everything else to medium settings. I've not played around with anything else since it crashed again. Obviously I'd rather have the game on higher graphical settings and with strand hair on, but I'll take the win in being able to play it on medium at least.

Same problem. Everything's up to date. Constant graphics driver crashes.

There are plenty of related discussions on Reddit and some blogs. None of them offer the solution.

Occasionally after a crash I see the same error as described here, but nothing from the blog fixes the issue: https://clawsomegamer.com/dragon-age-the-veilguard-dxgi-error-fix/

      Yeah it's become very irritating.

I just replied above, but I may have a solution? I hope

Found a fix. Un-installed the game. After reinstalling everything's working as expected.

Before the game was crashing in every cut scene, couldn't play for 5 minutes.

I am now +20 hours into the game without any crash.

  • I’m having same crashing issue, even with settings all on low. On the first Solas cut scene all characters disappeared, then totally crashed Steam deck. Other games like Cyberpunk & Baldur’s Gate run fine - don’t know the issue :(
