Community Manager@bynarie For these, this could be due to many issues with the friend list that aren't new to just the EA App. It happened in Origin as well.
If you know the friend's ID, make sure that you hadn't blocked them. Also if you have a lot of blank friend accounts on your list, or you are close to the max list, start removing those inactive ones, or blank ones.
When you lower the friend list from inactive/blank profiles, you see more. Also, make sure they had not blocked you as well as that happens quite often without realizing it.
This is still happening... For example, I get the notification of "player1 is online"... I can view his profile, but the user does not show on my friends list... No way of communicating with this person.. So its definitely something wrong with the app itself.
