destination folder doesn't exist

For the last 6 months, I have been successfully playing Sims 4 with mods using an external hard drive. A couple days ago, there was a mandatory update that made the app crash and when I restarted my hard drive everything went south from there. I had to completely wipe my external hard drive and download the EA app again. Once I did that and tried to redownload the Sims 4, it would not let me. For the last couple of days I have tried everything. When I hit download, it automatically pauses and when I click it again it says "that folder doesn't exist — Double check your installation destination, then try again." I have done that. I've tried downloading it straight to my MacBook and to the external hard drive. Neither is working.
