DLC purchased on Steam not usable on Mac + conflicting EA support guidance

Hi, I’m looking for clarification or escalation regarding Sims 4 DLC compatibility and EA support guidance.

I purchased multiple Sims 4 expansion packs through Steam (on Windows), and my Steam account is correctly linked to my EA account. All DLC appear in my EA library.

However, on macOS, all packs are labeled “Available on Windows” and cannot be installed.

I initially contacted EA support and was told my entitlements should work on Mac, which led me to spend several hours troubleshooting (cache clears, reinstall, etc.). After multiple chats and over 7 hours of support time, I was ultimately told that Steam purchases cannot be used on Mac and that I would need to repurchase everything.

I understand that there may be platform limitations, but the conflicting information from EA support and the amount of time spent troubleshooting based on incorrect guidance has been extremely frustrating.

I would also strongly recommend that EA consider working with Steam to create an option for Mac users to access content they have already purchased. As it currently stands, this creates a situation where customers are required to repurchase the same content for a different platform, which feels unfair given the cost of expansion packs and the expectation that linked accounts would provide cross-platform access.

Is there any way this can be reviewed, or is there any official clarification from EA on this situation?

I would really appreciate any guidance or escalation.

  • luckyyghoul  The second support rep was correct: the Steam DLC won't work in macOS.  The reason is that any content you own in Steam is only accessible when you've installed the base game through Steam, even in Windows.  Since Steam only offers the Windows version of the base game, the content can't be installed in macOS.

As far as official statements go, I can try to find one if it's important to you, but a lot of the information posted when Sims 4 was first available on Steam was on the old forum and either didn't migrate over or is buried somewhere.

Is there never going to be a possibility for Mac users to access their content? Is EA intentionally blocking access for mac users?

  • luckyyghoul  I guess that depends on whether EA is ever motivated to renegotiate the license with Steam.  It's never happened for Sims 3, so maybe not, but anything is possible.

As for whether this is intentional, I would categorize it more as a known side effect.  I very much doubt that EA decided to block the content outright.  Rather, this is a forseeable outcome of a decision about a different matter and is apparently not important enough to try to find a solution.
