EA app cannot manage two installations of NFS 2015

First of all: why having two installations of Need for Speed game (aka NFS 2015) on a computer? Main reason in my case is the game can only manage a single player profile, so if you want to restart your progress you lose your cars, your money, and so on.

As I bought the game on Origin and it is also available at Steam, I tried creating a second EA account and installing again from Steam. It worked fine when I was using Origin app: depending on the EA account I used to login, the app was activating the copy linked to that account. Unfortunately, as you all know, some time ago we had to replace Origin app by EA app.

For some reason, EA app is not able to manage my configuration, so it considers both installations of the game are linked to one of the EA accounts. Therefore, when you login to EA app using the other account, the game cannot be launched neither reinstalled, as it is considered "an incompatible version of the game".

I opened a case on EA Help and after trying plenty of things the issue is still not solved. I will really appreciate any information that could help to solve the issue.

Thanks!

  • I don't like to use ANSWERS HQ, despite we (EA customers) can get some benefits from it. The reason is ANSWERS HQ is a hidden and very profitable business for EA, as many tasks of Customer Support that should be done by their employees is done by us, the customers. Cool.

After 10 days, EA Help still didn't solve the issue I explained in my previous post, but I was investigating a little bit and I found the cause of the issue and a workaround to avoid the problem. I know that using two different EA accounts and having two installations of the same game is not very usual, but just in case I will share it here:

As I expected, there is nothing wrong on my computer: the issue is produced by EA app. (By the way, recently someone from EA Help told me EA app is still in beta phase... Why the f**ck EA forced all of us to replace Origin app by an application full of bugs and still beta???)

First time you launch one of the copies of the game, EA app sets a key in Windows registry with the installation folder of that game. That key is unique and the value is not updated afterwards. When I sign in to the EA app with my other EA account, it shows the game in My Collection, but marked as disabled, because it is already installed with a different EA account.

The workaround is pretty simple: before launching the EA app, you have to modify the registry and set the installation folder that corresponds to the copy of the game you want to play. The key is:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EA Games\Need for Speed\Install Dir

I hope this information could help some one! (unfortunately I am sharing it with EA as well, what a shame!)
