Mac EA app - "The app crashed unexpectedly" or "Background Services Crashed"

When does the error occur (opening the EA app, starting a game via the EA app, or during gameplay?): EA App crashes on start up

Like many others, I was directed to update to the EA app from  Origin this morning. When I did so through the Origin app, the EA app crashed. I installed it, and downloaded a fresh copy from the EA website. The crashing continued. I have restarted my computer, shut down my security apps, and uninstalled and reinstalled the EA app. Nothing works and I can no longer play my EA games.
