Re: How do I bypass the EA App and access Origin to play games.

Hi, I tried to disable the EA app by using " <Setting key="MigrationDisabled" type="1" value="true" /> " and it didn't work since the latest Origin update. Any new ideas please?

UPDATED GUIDE FOR RETURNING TO ORIGIN

    1) Uninstall your Origin, because the new patch (10.5.122) from EA broke everything again

    2) Download the Origin Offline Installer (https://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe)

    3) Install, be sure to remove the checkboxes from the paragraphs about "auto update"

    4) After installation DO NOT log in to your account. Go to "C:\ProgramData\Origin" (attention, the folder "ProgramData" will be hidden by default), find there and open in Notepad (or any other text editor) file "local.xml", the last line there will be </Settings>, BETWEEN this line add this line (you will most likely need to add an empty line by pressing Enter first) <Setting key="MigrationDisabled" type="1" value="true"/>

    5) Delete the three files called "OriginThinSetupInternal.exe" which are located at THREE LOCATIONS

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin

    C:\ProgramData\Origin

    C:\ProgramData\Origin\SelfUpdate\Staged

    6) Log in to your Origin account, now everything should work There may be a little update notification on top of Origin window, just don't click on it (you can close it by clicking on the cross)

First let me say thank you for sharing your work-around with the community.  I was, at least, able to play for a while.  Now I am completely locked out due to EA removing our ability to stop the forced migration.

I must say with great trepidation that I am excruciatingly and vehemently angry with EA right now!!!  Change is not always good.  The "EA app" has caused soo much negative emotions among gamers, including ME.  I am unable to play with a game that cost several hundred dollars because the app doesn't function properly.

Just a thought - Those of us who are not members of the EA Creator Network will not get proper attention as it relates thereto.  We don't have a direct line to SimguruNinja, etc.  Instead, we will be told to - just have patience.  Yet while we wait, we are unable to enjoy our expended capital.  Devon Bumpkin couldn't play his game for almost a week due to the apps failure.  The truly sad part is EA knew the app wasn't ready, yet they released it and are now forcing it on players.

Gamers now only have two options, 1 - wait for EA programmers to "figure it out," or 2 - loose our money and stop playing altogether.   ..... Hummm - a class action....

Again, thanks for listening and thanks for all your assistance.

Thanks but doesn't work for me. Set the local.xml to read only even... When you open origin it removes the read only and removes the line we added. The popup comes up about install EA app. There is no x or "cross" to close it.

    Also the C:\ProgramData\Origin doesn't have "OriginThinSetupInternal.exe"
    I searched my drive and found a 3rd "OriginThinSetupInternal.exe" located in C:\users\(profile name)\AppData\Local\Origin\ThinSetup\10.5.122.52971

But even deleting that etc still no go.

Yeah it doesn't work for me, too. I'm gonna stop playing unless someone finds a way to avoid this migration process.

I am sorry but I ain't going to go through random xml codes just to get my game to play for a day, I say screw it, Origin is a major failure are they wouldn't have added their stuff to steam and now they are trying to fix it for the Sims 5, but I will make one final note.  I will not buy the Sims 5 if the only option for it is on EA App.  It is time we stand up against corperate launchers that all they do is waste space with bad programing from companies that don't even know how to create them.  So this point on I am buying the Sims 5 on steam if not on steam than I will not buy the Sims 5 that is my condiction and if they want to sell their games they will make it avaiable.  I am tired of corporate launcher that have specai games you can only get on one platform.  If we want them to change than we the users gamers have the power to affect their pocket book and that is how we will win.

  • @everyone
Premised it's not my procedure but is from "Ha_DHuWe".
I did it and it works great to this day. Maybe you missed some step?
I can't find all those files either, I use W7x64Pro and only find them in:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin
    C:\ProgramData\Origin\SelfUpdate\Staged
    Eliminate those, that's enough.
The important thing is to delete ALL the old Origin installation (settings included), and install the "old and complete" one indicated in the link (hoping it's still there and it's the right one. EA/Origin may have changed it. Check that it is right 10.5.119, otherwise I can provide it, if needed).
IMPORTANT: Before logging in, remove the checkboxes from everything that refers to "automatic update"!
As for the "local.xml" file, in my experience, with the old version of Origin, just make it read-only.
And always in my experience, contrary to what was once suggested (when Origin was NOT so arrogant and "mangy"), DO NOT set the startup as administrator and not even when starting the PC. If you have an icon on your desktop, run the software as "any user", DO NOT upgrade that software's privileges.
I did that and it still works for me like it used to. Indeed, better, because it never asks to update.
More than that I just don't know how to help.
Try EVERYONE to "plague" the support service with complaints and it would really be appropriate to organize a "class-action" :-(

    P.S.
Obviously you have to do all this procedure as "administrator". I hope there is still no need to explain it and that you all use your PC as an administrator (which is always a limited account, because M$ is paranoid and unable to make secure O.S. and can't find other solutions than to "limit" users... but if you know what you're doing, that's fine. If you DON'T know what you're doing, forget it... the PC is not for you).

  • @quick_5555
You must follow the procedure described! You still have the latest new version forcing the APP. Follow ALL the procedure described and ONLY use the old version of Origin (10.5.119).

@MsDSweets I gureentee if they want people to be able to play the Sims 4 growing together expansion pack they will fix origin and give us a choose between origin and EA App, they have one choose they released the growing together DLC which not many can play or even buy because of the EA App bloatwear is overiding and preventing updates for us to play or buy the DLC
  • I believe that the latest "good" version (which DOES NOT force the APP) the "OriginSetup 10.5.119" can also be found on the Mule... in case they delete the link or change the software. Check, however, that it is the good and original one. By now, the way EA/Origin behaves, ALWAYS check that the software is "really" the old one and EA/Origin hasn't replaced it with the new one! It won't do anygood accept for games that can't be updated, but my game was in the process of being updated before the EA App bloatwear app.

RacingGunClean... has pointed out some tricks that may help. People need to be doing the Origin client install with Internet disconnected temporarily.

    Add the code line in the file...... do note...even though you originally add it at bottom, it will end up near middle cuz the client continues writing data to that file. Just look in the file thoroughly.....it shouldn't actually be getting deleted. It may get re-written into a different format however. Like in mine, it changed to;

    <Setting value="true" key="MigrationDisabled" type="1"/>

I'm guessing Origin client didn't like the original format maybe.

Anyway, then be sure those 'OriginThinSetupInternal.exe's are deleted from your system. Just do a search in file explorer for that whole name and you should find all instances.

Eventually, you need to re-connect to internet and log into your Origin account...at which time it'll try an force Origin client to update. Just be sure to ALWAYS cancel out of those popups. And, if need be, close it out and double check the 'local.xml' to be sure the code line is there.....somewhere in file...and delete the .exe's again. Then startup Origin again. It's worked for me so far.....crossing fingers.

  • Small addition that can be useful for many.

The original "OriginSetup.exe" version 10.5.119 file, in addition to the MD5 posted above, weighs a good 233,656 KB (228 MB or 239,263,472 bytes).

The file MUST be the COMPLETE one, as well as the "old" one, otherwise it will necessarily require to be "completed" and will download the new version on the net which is NOT good.

If you don't find the right and complete one, contact me, I'll send it to you.

The OriginSetup.exe file I got when you posted the download link earlier is 233,641 KB.  Is that the wrong one?  Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge!!!

  • Probably EA/Origin changed the file at that link. Like all the other changes he made after reading the systems to continue using Origin and NOT switch to the APP. Nice behavior of ****.
Look for that original file on "Emule" and verify that it has:
    1)
    233,656 KB (228 MB or 239,263,472 bytes)
    2)
    MD5: 6cc246ee36e64353d2c06d9b01f11f1a
    SHA-256: 96dd509049603220aad072d10730d864ce6a7dd6501fe86e45903d92fa13c0f1

Best wishes to everyone and DO NOT let us be overwhelmed by this absurd and arrogant behavior!

    🤞

P.S. It would be nice if we all shared the last "good" file with others, but if you have problems with Emule, contact me and I can provide you with the original file.

I tried several of the the complete older versions and despite unchecking all the boxes it gives the installer still automatically downloaded/installed the newest 10.5.122 version.

    To solve it:

Disconnect from internet and then go through the instructions a couple posts back (if this was in the instructions or an earlier post I missed it).

To all else wondering if this is your problem:

You can verify that is what it is doing by going to your install folder and either hovering over the Origin exe and checking the File Version or right clicking -> Properties -> Details and seeing the version there. Anything higher than 10.5.119 and this is your problem.

  • @WhosWiII This means you'll never be able to update your games if a newer version appears. I play Sims 4 and the new update was going to be worth it.
I can't even get the stupid EA App to INSTALL. I always get an error code (INST-14-1603) which even with EA's support people could NOT be fixed.
EA are really dishonest if they don't fix all of this. Just let me go back to the ORIGIN LAUNCHER that was WORKING FINE!

Could there be something unique to Windows 10 that prevents this workaround from working? Ive tried three times and no matter what I try when I open origin it just has the ea app window over everything. Ive followed your directions to the letter, the only difference I can see is that my machine runs Windows 10.

Have you completely uninstalled the current version of Origin ?
Are you sure you have installed the full 10.5.119 version? (KB & MD5 checked)
Did you follow all the procedure described by "Ha_DHuWe" ?
Have you also tried to do it with the PC disconnected from the network, as suggested by "Mardoin69" ? (it worked for me connected too, but it costs nothing to try).
    >>> Try doing everything right again, but first make sure you're installing from a file that is SURELY the complete and original 10.5.119.

    🤞

Workaround worked a few days ago; but no longer.

  • @bohémien1980
Instead of complaining three different times without explaining anything, why don't you write once exactly what you did and what problem you see?
Isn't it that you work for EA to make "smoke" on the solution?
    It keeps working for me.

It has been MONTHS since this issue started - December 2022 - and EA has done absolutely nothing to even acknowledge it.

  • I think the only way to get their attention is for each of us to WRITE A NEW TOPIC POST with the title "EA App DOESN'T INSTALL.  BRING BACK THE ORIGIN LAUNCHER!" so that this website gets FLOODED with COMPLAINTS listed on and on and on.
