I just want to say that thanks to @Bluebellflora and also independent verification, I am now confident that this issue does not pose a security risk. I have been told that in more recent versions of the OS the root user has fewer write privileges than previously. Also that other reputable apps do something similar and this is fine. No one has said there is any cause to worry. And if it’s been notarized by Apple, that in itself should give us confidence in using the app.
I’m really grateful to BluebellFlora for providing the information to put my mind at rest so that I can get back to enjoying my game. I hope others will now be able to do likewise.
Also, this issue aside, I’ve actually been very happy with the EA app since I installed it a few weeks ago. Maybe I’ve just been fortunate, but I’ve had no issues and for me it’s been an upgrade on Origin 🙂
