NB: If you only reply to the main post with @name reference, the replies are in roughly chronological order. So I intend to do that in the future. Let's see if it works.
Another thing is that if you use @ the notification will take you directly to the reply.

This is exactly how we need to start posting, so we can at least order posts chornologically, either by Oldest or Newest. No nested replies, all replies should be to main post, we quote the poster we want to reply to and add the @ before username so they get notified.

I was starting to come to the same conclusion myself. The direct reply button on a post initially seemed convenient because it opens the text box right below the post you want to reply to, so you don't have to keep scrolling up to refer to the post and then scrolling down to type. But the nested replies it then generates just make the thread hard to read over all. And as you both note using the @ name reference makes it easier to find other people's replies to your own posts using the notifications. I think in most cases I will stop using the nested replies.
My work around, to get the same convenience of being able to see the post I am responding to but not using the nested replies, will be to type my reply in a separate document which I can have open next to the forum window and then copy and paste into the text box. I used to do that sometimes on the old forum too.
Incidentally, and unrelated, is there a way to use the quote box feature where is shows as two separate boxes? I tried to but each of the two quotes above in their own boxes and it just keeps combining them into one.
