Game hard restarting my PC

Hi, I'm having an issue where in certain parts of the game, my PC hard reboots (as if someone had pressed the reset button). This is making it impossible for me and my friend to progress in the game.

The places where this happens for me:

  • When you first meet the vacuum cleaner and it coughs up dust on you - happened roughly 3-4x while we were trying to resolve it
  • The area with three switchable fans, as soon as I reach the third fan - happened 2x, but got past it without a restart once
  • During the cutscene for the vacuum boss fight - happened once, stopped playing after this

(images from a YouTube video I found)

What I've tried:

  • Upgrading video drivers
  • Removing my CPU overclock
  • Reducing graphics settings - this is the only thing that seems to have made any sort of difference

I suspect that it has something to do with the particles in the scene as the scenes this happens in appear to be pretty particle-heavy and the only thing that helped was reducing the game's graphics settings. It did not fix the issue, however. It simply pushed it to a slightly later part of the game (as seen above).

My specs:

CPU: Intel I7-6700k @ 4.40GHz

GPU: ASUS Strix OC RTX 2080 Ti

RAM: HyperX Fury 32GB DDR4 @ 2433 MHz

SSD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB

Is anyone else having this problem? We'd love to be able to play this game, but this issue is making it impossible.

  • @EA_Illium Thanks for looking into it. I used the same rig, both on Windows and Linux and got the same reset.

Good news is that I upgraded my CPU to an AMD 5900X which fixed the issue and I was able to finish the game without problems. So it must have had something to do with running the game with my specific hardware configuration.

@bogeymanEST Do you have anything else running with the game? Can you try disabling any overlays you have (including Origins)?
  • Thanks for the suggestion. I tried closing everything except Discord, Steam and Origin in addition to disabling all overlays running with the game but still no luck, it once again restarted my computer at the three fans part (2nd bullet in the OP).

Additionally, I tried running the game in Linux using Proton and I experienced the same exact hard reboot, but this time it was about 3 seconds into the very first cutscene (with the car pulling into the driveway).

@bogeymanEST Wanted to confirm if you are playing on a windows device or through linux, I have been testing this from my rig and was unable to get it to reset there. If this is still happening would you be able to share a DXdiag?

Might also want to check the event viewer.
Right-click the Windows icon in the bottom left, click on Event Viewer.
Make the window that pops up a bit bigger and opens the tab windows log.
There you see the system logs, click them open, and look for critical errors.

  • Did you every find a solution, my partner and I had the exact same thing happen but at a different moment in the game. It was the cutscene after the bull fight. The pc that was hosting just hard rebooted... (Tried it 3 times and would reboot at the exact spot everytime). This is quite frightening how a game can actually do that. This has never happened to me before.

We seem to have gotten passed the cutscene by switching hosts and using a different account to continue the game. I don't really understand how a game can actually reboot a computer, this seems quite worrisome.

We are worried that this will happen again. We are actually streaming our playthrough and had to restart stream and end stream early because of this sadly.

    Thanks for any feedback!

As mentioned above, upgrading my PC resolved the issue, but I understand it's probably not a very easy solution to try. The only thing that I can think of that could hard reset a PC like that is tripping the PSU's protections.
