Outcast: Second Contact

Dear Sir/Madam:

In part one of the game "Outcast: Second Contact" I have to break some jars with a laster gun. (a test to pass to give entry to the second part of the game) .  I tried doing that and it would not work.  Please tell me what to do?  Thank you.
