I think my 3 hopes for F1 25 (and beyond) would be:
- Improved AI – Probably the main reason I play the game less nowadays. They’re too cautious on the starts and in DRS trains, behave very unpredictably in battles. They often pick the same strategy, there’s no logic when it comes to taking engine penalties such that it makes the end of a season unrealistic. With better AI that is varied, aggressive, and fun, I’d be far more inclined to play more of the game instead of sticking mostly to league racing.
- Better physics balancing – I love the ‘dynamic’ part of the ‘Dynamic Handling’ that was added this game - the variable tyre wear, feeling, and temperatures that adapt to your driving style and the nature of the track. However it doesn’t feel balanced correctly to me – driving super aggressive and ignoring it all is just faster, such that the vast majority do just ignore it! There’s not enough benefit to trying to save your tires, trying an alternate strategy, running the race with less fuel and lifting & coasting etc.
The negative consequences of high peak surface temperatures, excessive wheel slip etc. probably need to be dialed up a bit – for me this would greatly improve the driving experience and make it far more nuanced and realistic, and less monotonous.
- Better online safety rating system – The reason I don’t touch F1 World is because CPU cars are frustrating, and public lobbies are just a nightmare. I appreciate that this is an extremely difficult thing to manage and get right, but if Ranked/Online F1 World events were less chaotic and had better driving standards, I’d be far more inclined to play them. Maybe borrowing aspects from other games, like competency ratings at certain tracks and the safety rating system in ACC, or achieving licences through in-game time-trial/missions like in Gran Turismo for example. Either way I'm not convinced these modes will catch on until the actual driving experience in them improves.
Overall, I think sometimes it’s easy to forget that the core aspect of this game is the actual driving. As nice as shiny new features or game modes are, I’d be far happier with a simple game where this core gameplay mechanic, driving F1 cars, was more enjoyable, realistic, and fun!
