F1 24 PS4 Glitching/Freezing and Frame Drops

I bought F1 24 for the PS4 for my son for Xmas.  I bought the digital version of the game from the Playstation store.  However the game is virtually unusable due to the amount of times the game stutters and freezes during a race.  It is fine when doing a time trial or when there are no other cars on the track, but the minute there are multiple cars the game continually drops frames and stutters and makes the game almost unplayable.

I know the PS4 is not an up to date console, but if a game is released on that platform surely it should at least be playable.

Does anyone else have this problem, or are there any settings I can try and change to improve performance.  I've been through and changed anything I thought might help, but it hasn't had any effect.  I have also tried deleting the game and reinstalling, but again no difference.

The game is installed on an SSD on a PS4 slim.  We don't have any issues with any other games.
