I agree that Spurs should have taken all three points but with the number of players we have missing, I was hoping for at least a point going in so I can't be too disappointed. Our bench was two gk's, a few defenders and then all academy guys who have not played yet.
I have no idea what ETH is doing. I thought he would turn the club around and I know it takes time but the improvements are barely noticable. I'm sure there is more behind the scenes making it difficult and it is not all on him but as someone who used to dread playing United, I can tell you that feeling is truly gone. Now I looked forward to the games thinking it is a good chance for a result against a top side.
For Spurs, I still can't believe this season. After Jose, Nuno, and Conte sucking the fight out of the club, this year is hard to believe. We have played without our best XI or best players for most of the year but keep fighting in every match. I can't wait to see what Ange does with a full squad.
A year ago a lot of us were praising Casemiro as one of the league's best midfielders and a standout signing, albeit a short term one. He's been absent with injury for quite some time this season, and he was awful before that, also coming back from the summer break out of shape. Lisandro Martinez was a standout player too, but was injured in one of the first games and only just had his comeback the other day. Luke Shaw being injured for most of the season. Individual defensive mistakes, especially from Onana, costing a lot of points in the Champions League group, despite being the best keeper in the Champions League last season. Marcus Rashford, a standout player on his day, being so poor all season, contrary to the form he had in the first 75% of last season, before his form dropped towards the end.
I don't know if all this falls back on ten Hag, honestly. Man United players have a history of throwing managers under the bus, and I can't comprehend how these players can be so good in one season and so appalling in the next. Or just from one game to the next. Or just being great in a first half and poor in a second half, or the other way around. I know Spurs have quite a few players out with injury right now, but if you look at Man United's injury record this season, it hasn't really been the easiest conditions to rebuild a football club. Who would have thought that a 36 year old Jonny Evans would arrive and turn out to be our best signing of the summer?
I don't agree with some of ten Hag's decisions, tactics etc., and some of his signings have also been quite poor. But I think he's done some good work trying to break a poor cycle of player power, as he did with Sancho - and Ronaldo before that. Still, with all the troubles, he made the team perform well vs Chelsea and make a great comeback vs Villa, despite being 2-0 down at half time after a very poor first half. But once again consistency was an issue, and the club lost both games following those two wins. Bottomline, I really think this manager needs more time, also getting a run of games with some of the crucial players back in the matchday squad.
