Broken ball sense for intelligent ball players

Why do my forwards hide behind opponents when I need to make a short pass to them. Lobbed through balls always seem to be for my opponents to catch and my forwards to defend rubbish, even when I urge them to make runs before the amazingly fast defenders move they still fail to catch the ball
