Corners and Automatic Switching

I usually call a player short for a corner, so when I take the corner I'll hit the short pass button. Lately it's been pot luck whether that pass goes to the player who I've called short or whether it does a long ground pass straight to the opponents player in the box. I'm not pressing different buttons, I'm not pressing the button for long and I'm not doing anything different to what I have always done What the hell is going on???

Also, I have the settings on auto switching for loose balls and air balls. I manually switch most of the time. Why is it that when there's a loose ball my player just stands there, it doesn't auto switch to him and I have to manually switch it. There's been quite a few times where I've failed to gain possession due to my player standing there like a total space cadet, while a loose ball bounces in front of him.
