Controller unresponsive in game online Xbox onr

As the subject states, I'm running ea fc24 on an Xbox one. I bought a new Xbox wireless controller just before Christmas and was playing the game without issue. However, in the last week I have been unable control my player in any of the online modes, volta, clubs and seasons. No issue when playing the offline equivalent or career. Indeed rolling back to FIFA23 no issue playing online or offline.

Why would a controller simply stop working for one type of game play?
