AJAX are looking for ways to come out of the hole they've essentially dug themselves. It seems a lifetime ago but just over two years ago in February 2022, Ajax was on the peak of its powers...
'For the first time since fall of 2021, we have the feeling that Ajax are completely dominant', says Maarten Vledder, known as Kokkie from the Kale & Kokkie-duo (die-hard Ajax fans with their own tv-show and podcast about their beloved club). 'Five years ago, we wiped the floor with teams like Sporting CP (away win, 1-5), PSV (home, 5-0 win) and Dortmund (home, 4-0). This feels exactly like that!'
Ajax are flying high! First up was The Klassieker. 'After the 0-2, Feyenoord completely collapsed. And I think that the Ajax-players that were there on April 7th 2024 (Rensch, Hato, Fitz-Jim, Brobbey and subs Sosa, Godts and Rijkhoff) smelled a chance for ultimate revenge.' On that day, Ajax suffered its biggest ever defeat, losing 6-0 to the arch rival. 'This set the record straight!', says Lawrence de Munck, the other half of the duo.
And it didn't stop there. The goals came just as easily against FC Utrecht. 'What we noticed is that Kaio Cesár is finding his rhythm in this team. At a certain moment we thought, Daniel Marzec made an error by signing him, but he's starting to catch up and is rising to the overall level of this team.'
In UEFA Champions League, Ajax defeated Sevilla 4-0. After a fairly equal first half, Djibril Sow collected a red card at the cusp of halftime. That would make the second half a formality, with Ajax extending their one goal lead to four. 'We are now seven points up from the 24th (the lowest ranking in order to advance) with nine points left in play and we have the best goal difference of all.'
Even if the gap in Eredivisie seems huge, Kale & Kokkie want Ajax to remain vigilant. 'If you lose to AZ in the last round of the calendar year (December 20th) and don't come out of the winter break all guns blazing, then by February these results will've meant nothing.' In between, a cup game against PSV in the Dutch Cup awaits.
The next round in UEFA Champions League sees Ajax (3rd) visit Estádio Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid (5th). 'Let's hope for a repeat of 1995 (0-2 win) or 2019 (1-4 win). Ajax currently have the quality and form to pull it off! And we're still not completely safe for the next round.' In early 2027, Ajax will finish the league phase with two home games against first Bayern (7th) and then Juventus (20th).
You're cooking mate. 6-1 at De Kuip, that is an awesome result. Truly one for the ages. 6-1, 6-0, 4-0 and 4-1, it seems you are closing in on that form where you just go from strength to strength. Impressive. Good to see a bigger diversity on your goal scorers too. It seems that more are joining Brobbey and Aboukhlal on the scoreboards now.
