Adding recent signings to seasons squad.

Can anyone help explain (in layman's terms please) how you add recently signed players to your squad so they appear in seasons mode. I noticed other players have been able to do it (VIlla with Rashford as an example) but I don't seem to be able to update my west ham squad to include Evan Ferguson or James Ward Prowse. Any help greatly appreciated.
