Remove BASE playstyles

To be clear, I am talking about the removal of only base (silver) PlayStyles, while Gold (PlayStyle+) traits would remain untouched. This may sound slightly strange at first, but stay with me. Imagine if every player in the game automatically had all the base PlayStyles. That should be made the new baseline state, effectively removing base PlayStyles from cards entirely.

In my view, the main issue with the current meta is that it is possible for a single card to have almost all of the best base PlayStyles. Consequently, if a new card is missing just one of them, it easily becomes much less attractive or even useless.
This isn't an issue with Gold PlayStyles because their limit per card is lower (sometimes much lower) than the total number of truly meta traits. Because you cannot have them all, it naturally leads to a significantly higher number of viable combinations. For example:

  • A defender with anticipate+ and bruiser+ can be just as good as one with intercept+ and block+
  • However, that will only be true if they have all the remaining defensive base PlayStyles. Without them, they fall out of the meta.

Moreover, some strong core mechanics in the game are completely mediocre unless a card has the corresponding base PlayStyle. Logically, the meta forces players away from cards without them.
Finesse Shot is the prime example. I will rarely attempt one without the base PlayStyle because the shot is usually not great.

  • No PlayStyle: The mechanic is weak/unusable.
  • Base PlayStyle: The mechanic becomes genuinely useful.
  • PlayStyle+: The mechanic becomes extremely powerful.

That first stage is what we need to get rid of. We should make finesse shots useful on all cards (provided they have good enough shooting stats, of course). Then, Finesse+ should provide a boost - one that is good to have, but not mandatory on all attackers.

I actually think the balance between silver and gold PlayStyles is currently in a good spot. There is almost no PlayStyle+ that I feel like I can't live without, as long as I have the base silver version. The frustration and repetitiveness in the meta lie entirely in the massive difference between having a base PlayStyle and having no PlayStyle at all.

This brings me back to my core suggestion: Remove base PlayStyles entirely and make the "default" state of cards equal to what they have with base PlayStyles now. Gold PlayStyles would still function as a brilliant way to make cards feel unique. However, if they remain strictly limited to 1, 2, or 3 per card - and no individual trait is completely overpowered - there will be many viable playstyle combinations, which would make the meta a lot more diverse and less restrictive.
