Bug Report - Match Coverage

Summarize your bug Match Coverages are just straight broken; Wheel routes aren't covered at all (linebacker breaks off coverage when the route goes deep enough). Additionally, available coverages should be expanded. There isn't just "Quarters" or "Palms". I would be happy to meet with your developers to fix this issue; I have coding experience and am pretty well versed in Football X's and O's. 1. Available coverages should AT LEAST include MOD, MIX, SWITCH, BRACKET for base MATCH coverages. (In addition to Cover-3 "Seam/Match"/MABLE vs. Trips) 2. Coaching options should allow for setting the weakside coverage technique when selecting a version of MATCH Cover 7 (Cover 4). There isn't any versatility on defense to make your players play routes the way you want them to. Example: MEG (Corner takes WR one on one) DOG (Corner trails vertical routes, coverages anything underneath with help over the top from the weakside safety) CONE (Corner and Safety BRACKET Weakside WR) TUFF (Safety Robs Weakside WR, inside and under; Corner covers outside and Deep), CUT (Cover-2) (Corner plays the Flat, Weakside APEX robs the weakside WR, Safety plays over the top. 3. Trips checks should be available in Coaching Options. STUBBIE/SPECIAL, STUMP/STOMP, and SOLO/POACH should all be options for Cover 7 (Cover 4), and MABLE and SKATE should be available for Cover 3. 4. Match coverage is 100% broken vs. Bunch sets. The 2 most common checks to a bunch are BOX and BINGO. Both should be available. BOX - Corner has first Deep out - Safety has first Deep in - APEX has FIRST-to-FLAT - Hook Linebacker has first IN breaking route BINGO - If #1 goes UNDER (behind #2), turns into BOX rules (Corner plays Deep Outside) - If #1 "Stays #1" (Vertical or Outside), corner takes #1 in MAN, Safety drops to deep half - APEX has FIRST-to-FLAT - Hook Linebacker has first IN breaking route - Safety has first Deep in
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Run literally any play against Quarters or Palms. If you understand the rules of the coverages, you'll see that they don't work.
What happens when the bug occurs? Players either cover the wrong player, cover nobody, or break off of coverage for no reason.
What do you expect to see? I expect players to Match routes according to the rules of the coverage. Mistakes can be made vs. complicated route combinations (as they do in real life), based on player ratings. This would be easy to code; just increase the probability of matching the wrong player based on the route combination and the player ratings. Mistakes should not be made on basic routes (Vertical routes).

    @Th3RealSpace Couldnt have said it better.

    Def feels like the devs really don't understand pattern matching on a fundamental level. (No shade, just facts)

    It's what most teams in the league run these days. The Seattle Spot drop Coverage 3 was a 2010's staple...not anymore.

    I suggest using the Zone Coverage rating (ZCV) and Play Recognition (PRC) rating as a way to measure/regulate a defender's ability to pattern match.

    The game has so many bugs I took a fly swatter and hit my xbox several times then realized it is just this piece of crap game that is the problem.

    Still nothing. Can someone from EA please call me? I seriously want to help you guys fix defense. This madden is one of the worst it's ever been to play defense.

    I’m sure this is not the fix you are looking for, as match coverages should work on default settings, but if you go into defensive coaching adjustments and scroll all the way to the bottom you will see zone coverage-default. If you change this setting, the other option is “match”. If you set this adjustment to match instead of default, match coverages work as intended. I’m not sure what effect this has on non match coverages, but it will make the match coverages operate correctly. Hope this helps

    @imoveryourhead Thank you, but I am well aware of the match coverages already available in the game (Quarters, Palms, Cover 6, Cover 9, their variations, and Cover 3 seam). The problem is that these coverages are all broken under certain circumstances, the apex players do not play their leverage correctly, they are horrible vs. bunch because of the lack of an effective BOX or BINGO check, and frankly, there are many more variations of match coverage that aren't included, but should be (outlined in my post).

    Beyond that, defenders don't even play gaps in the run fit; they just run around like morons and as a user defender it's almost impossible to know what the AI players around you are going to do when in real life, everyone has an assigned responsibility to SPILL, BOX, 2-gap, play a heavy 5 technique, etc.

    I guess I misunderstood your complaint with match coverage. Honestly, no coverage in the game plays correctly according to their alignment and pre snap rules as it is. As cool as it would be to have some of the highly nuanced defenses of the NFL in the game, I don’t think the AI can handle making them operate properly if they cant get the vanilla defenses to work as it is. Plus most madden players would not understand the advanced concepts you are referring to. I think your best bet to getting some of these defensive concepts in the game would be on PC with the mod community, I just don’t see madden adding them into the base game any time soon when they already struggle to get the AI to play the most simple coverages correctly. Scheme wise football is an incredibly deep sport with way more nuance than sports like soccer or basketball so tuning AI logic in a football game is a uniquely difficult challenge even for developers with a deep understanding of NFL scheme

    @imoveryourhead I guess I just don't agree that it would be that difficult to program. I am a programmer and have dabbled in Unreal Engine (not what they use, but the point is I know how games are developed in theory).

    They already have mechanics to do things like PRESS/player contact and man coverage for example. It would not be that difficult to program an APEX defender (Such as a Nickel) to force a player into/out of the seam based on the rule of a coverage, and read the release to determine who they should cover in MAN; especially given that at the snap of the ball; the route distribution is already a known variable.
