PC BSOD on exit, every time

Running Madden 25 on a high end Windows 10 PC.

Since day one, my PC crashes hard with a black screen or blue screen EVERY TIME I exit the game (and now, so does BF2042).  I have spent untold hours troubleshooting this issue (many more hours troubleshooting than playing), and after the latest troubleshooting effort (a complete Win10 recovery reinstall using the latest Windows 10 ISO), I've now just experienced a black screen crash while in the game (browsing through the playbook in the trainer).

In the cases where I do get a blue screen instead of a black screen, the error shown is:

BSOD error: "Kernel APC pending during exit"

Some of the things I have tried but have not made any difference:

-Insured that nVidia graphics drivers are the latest.

-Insured that Windows had all of the latest patches and updates

-Reinstalled Windows from a freshly downloaded ISO and allowed all updates to  be applied

-Tried running the game in full screen, windowed, and borderless

-Insured that my system bios, chipset drivers, and other motherboard drivers were all up to date

-Performed a game repair through the EA game game app

-Set all settings back to the game defaults with low resolution screens, etc

-Disabled crossplay

-Unplugged all other game controllers (flight sticks, wheels, etc.) from my system

-Tried using only the keyboard as opposed to my xBOX controller for PC.

-Disabled ray traced Ambient Occlusion

-Disabled HDR

-Uninstalled and reinstalled EA anti-cheat

-Set processor affinity to use only  the P-cores

My specs are:

Windows 10 22H3 build 19045.3803

Intel I-9 14900KF processor OC'd to about 5.8

48GB Ram

MSI RTX4090

Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Hero Dark with water cooled processor.

Monitor is wide screen HDR400 3440 x 1400

See attached file for additional specs.

I have not verified this, but I think I'm getting a blue screen when exiting from  windowed and borderless modes, and I'm getting a black screen when exiting from  full screen.

Also, I've been playing  Battlefield 2042 for years with no issues, but on a whim I tested it out during M25 troubleshooting because it uses the same EA anti-cheat software, and sure enough, I found that it too now crashes my PC on exit.  After observing the issue under the various screen formats (windowed, borderless, full screen), The crash seems to be caused milliseconds after the game has exited and when probably unloading anti-cheat.

I had no issues last year with Madden 24 on the same PC., but I probably didn't play M24 after about October of 2023, and it is no longer on my PC, so I can't test it with the latest anti-cheat software.  I'm not sure when this issue was introduced to anti-cheat.  Is there a way to go back to an earlier version?

My PC is complex and it takes several minutes to power off and on, boot, log in, etc.  so I end up not being able to play Madden (and now BF2042) because I don't feel like waiting for the thing to reboot after every time I play.

When Googling for this issue, I found a few people with the same issue, but no answers other than to remove all drivers and peripherals, which is not practical.

I do overclock gently (and have done so for many years), and I run some pretty complex games with maximum or very high end settings like DCS, iRacing, RDR2, Cyberpunk, etc., often with a Pimax Crystal VR and flight sticks, throttles, seat shakers, etc., and my system is rock solid stable for everything except M25 (and now BF2042).

I can't find any way to contact EA support about this issue.  I guess, after selling millions of copies of a $70+ game, they can't afford to provide support?

Can anyone help?  Thanks.

  • did you try to run the games without oc? i am not really a pc-player but i dont think that it gives a lot of benefits to oc an highend-system like yours.

    Thank you for the reply.

During my troubleshooting, I decided not to try disabling OCing.  My OC is not very extreme, and I'm only OCing the cpu and the memory (I'm running the memory well below the rated speed because it wasn't stable at the rated PC8000 speed).  I configured the OC more than a year ago, and I stressed tested the heck out of that configuration.  It was stable, and so I've been running it like that for tons of games without any issues.  The OC is really for games like Cyberpunk with max graphics, DCS with VR, iRacing with VR, and other things that require maximum performance.  It is not practical to reboot the machine, go into the bios, and reconfigure the machine just to play one title.  That takes more time and effort to just letting the machine crash after playing, and it is easy to make a mistake when messing around with those settings.  Also, as I mentioned, I have not had trouble with other EA titles up until now, and suddenly both of my current EA titles (one of which has worked for years) are now suffering the same issue, so I have to believe that some problem has been introduced to a kernel level component that was not there previously.

    Regards

Only in the system info do I see so many differences in our almost identical machines...

OS | you: win 10 edu / me: win 11 pro

    CPU | you: i9-14900KF / me: i9-14900K

    GPU | you: RTX4090 / me: same

    RAM | you. 48GB / me: 128 GB 🙌

    smbios | you: 3.5 / me: 3.6

secure boot state | you: on / me: off

kernel dma protection | you: on / me: off

virtualization based security | you: not enabled / me: running...

if i see right then your mainboard bios is a little bit outdated.

    you: 1402

    stable: 1503

    beta: 1602

but maybe the issue is really related to madden, i dont know...

Nice machine you have there with the 128Gb of ram.  Thanks for taking the time to look through this stuff.

I did download the 1503 bios a couple of days ago when I was checking to see if I was on current versions.  1503 supposedly helps fix the Intel issue with CPU voltage damage.  I agree that I should go and check that out as a next step, but both BF2042 and Madden24 ran fine on my current version before installing M24.  First I have to go through and document my bios settings (tedious) because these upgrades always wipe out the settings, and then I end up having to start from scratch and spend two days reestablishing a baseline bios config as well as OCing parameters, memory timings, stress tests, etc.

A good test would be to upgrade the bios and then try and run Madden before I make any bios changes, so I'll give that a try.  If it works I can slowely add back the other custom stuff until I run into a problem.

The F version of the 14900K processor just eliminates the intel graphics as you probably know.

I did have virtualization enabled awhile back because I was running Linux in a VM, but now I run Linux on a separate PC.  Just the same its worth turning it back on to see if it helps.

Regarding Windows 11, initially there were a lot of claims that games were running slower on Windows 11, so I avoided it.  I also understand that it is impossible or nearly impossible to install and use Windows 11 with only a local account.  I have been building and using PC's since the early 1980's, and the recent efforts to force people into logging into a Microsoft company server in order to use their own PC is an unbelievable BigBrother type thing for me, but I'm sure there is a way around that if I Google a bit.

Isn't secure boot required for you to run Windows 11?  Maybe I'm confusing it with Trusted Platform Computing?  I'll do some research.

I know what DMA is, but I'm not sure what Kernel DMA protection is.  I'll research.

Thank You for stimulating my brain a bit.

No Joy on the BIOS upgrade.  I upgraded the bios, rebooted with the base default BIOS settings, went directly into Madden 25, when the main menu came up I exited, and black screen hard lockup.

Now I have to go through and reapply all of my bios settings.  I think I'm going to have to ask EA for a refund.  I bet I have 8 or 9 hours into troubleshooting this thing, but I've only played probably three games.
