Defensive AI Coverage and Run Support Issues
Issue Summary: Defensive AI behavior across multiple coverage types and run support scenarios is inconsistent and often ineffective. This includes problems with zone reaction, man coverage positioning, leverage adjustments, route commit responsiveness, and run fit execution—particularly by the WILL linebacker.
Detailed Observations:
- Zone Coverage (e.g., Cover 3 Palm):
- Defenders in zone coverage often stand still when an offensive player enters their zone.
- They delay reacting to the ball or receiver, resulting in easy completions.
- This behavior appears unaffected by ratings such as Awareness, Zone Coverage, and Play Recognition, which should govern zone responsiveness.
- Man Coverage:
- Defenders frequently chase short routes late, allowing separation.
- In some cases, they position themselves ahead of the receiver, effectively removing themselves from the play.
- These behaviors occur even with high-rated man coverage defenders.
- Coverage Technique Adjustments (Inside/Outside Leverage):
- Changing leverage settings does not influence defender behavior as expected.
- Defenders still get beat as if they were playing the opposite technique.
- This undermines strategic coverage calls and player control.
- Route Commit Functionality:
- The route commit mechanic is unreliable, even when using Superstar-caliber AI corners.
- Defenders often fail to respond appropriately to committed routes, leading to blown coverage or delayed reactions.
- Run Play Support – WILL Linebacker:
- During run plays, the WILL linebacker occasionally fails to respond to the play.
- This behavior is inconsistent, sometimes resulting in wide-open lanes or missed assignments.
- The issue appears unrelated to player ratings or play design.
