Why Veteran D-Line Free Agent Logic is Horrendously Terrible, Needs Updating
So I'm a big franchise mode fan and have done a few pretty long stretching careers already. In every single one, the same phenomenon keeps happening. Veteran defensive lineman, especially defensive tackles are not being picked up by computer teams in free agency. After a few years of a franchise sim goes by, you can consistently get the best free agent DT (usually 85+) at vet minimum in the third free agency period. If you don't they will still not be picked up by the time the start of the season rolls around and are often left in the free agency market if you don't pick them up. These aren't just random middle of the line players with low dev traits, I've seen superstars and 90+ rated players get absolutely 0 computer interest in free agency.
As an example, I am currently in year 2032 of my sim and Dexter Lawrence II was left without any computer interest until I picked him up during preseason. He is a 91 rated nose tackle with star dev, 91 power rusher, and 84 speed rusher, age 34. He even has a temp +6 ratings boost. He is the #8 ranked defensive tackle in the league and there was absolutely no interest. Derrick Brown had very similar ratings and age and similarly got no interest. There have been guys closer to the 30/31 age range with similar ratings also available.
I don't know the code behind it but here's what I think is happening. Teams are doing a good job of filling up to their salary caps (an improvement from previous years). These defensive tackles, in line with some recent real life contracts, are asking for 30 million dollar contracts in free agency. The teams who are competitive and would want these players, however, often have their salary caps full or close to full and so they don't even bother to offer these tackles because they think they won't be able to get them. The problem is then absolutely no teams make an offer and they just live in free agency. Even during the preseason period signing them as a free agent requires 10+ million dollars, even if it's into the season and it's looking like they wont play during the year. This logic is unrealistic and needs to change. I think the asking contract prices are set too high for these players. Either that or teams need to be more willing to put in lowball offers on these types of players so there's at least some competition for them and user's can't just sign top ten players at their position for vet minimum prices. The solution could be any number of a couple different things but please fix it.
