"Direct3D Didn't initiate probably please restart Mass Effect 2 and try again."

This is a message I've gotten all day, since I bough the DLC bundle and tried installing said bundle.

I've never had problems with Mass Effect games before, and less than 6 months ago the game worked perfectly. I've no Idea how to stop the error, nor how to fix anything related to it.

What I've tried so far:

Uninstall/reinstall: Nothing the game still has the same error.

Repair: Nothing.

Looked at DirectX, seems to be fine.

Just updated and enforced my graphic drivers. Still nothing.

Can't find anything else that can help me on the internet, so I'd go here before getting a staff to help me as that has taken forever before.

If someone can help me, or has the same problem, then I'd be more than happy to go through your suggestions and help.

  • Two things to look at.....

The main cause I have heard lately on this is Microsoft update to the latest version....it has caused many issues.

    1)  Make sure your card is set up in the control panel and any graphic specific program, such as Nvidia control panel to use max power.

    2)  Change your computer system options for monitor, the system resolution from whatever you have now, to something similar, restart your machine, then change the options back and then try the game.

Do you have the game on Origin or on Steam?

Please create a DxDiag in text file format, also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER and look if it has ME2 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up together with the DxDiag.

You can do that with the "choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

Thank you so muchmcsupersupport. I followed your advice, and now the game works. You've no idea how happy that makes me.

  • Game booted at first. I ran the tool to load my mass effect 1 save file. Now failing to correctly initialize direct 3d. Tried reinstall, repair, and resolution workarounds. No success...
